Interesting. Their online thing says the original iPad, 16GB WiFi is only worth $65 to them but these guys are saying $200 still applies ...

The website cannot find a store within 200 miles of me that will do the trade. Strange, since I live in the metro area where Target is headquartered.

What city?

I suspect the site isn't accurate, and if it fails to find a store where he had success, we'll know it.

According to the SD.net wiki for that thread, "This can also be done online (at website in OP) using the code novipad200. You get a shipping label. Could be an option for some. Thanks to dandiego"

I did it earlier and have my shipping label. For my brother's 1st Gen iPad, it was $65 with a $135 promotional credit added.

Ventura CA 93003; the online thing says No Stores Found. Yet his post from this morning:
Quote

so I had a first generation iPad – which I got when the second generation was launched - Apple website offered 45 dollar trade in value - then a Target ad indicated "up to 200 dollars" - I go to Target web and entered information - and this came back with 170 dollars - and I think - will 170 dollars is more than 45 so I go to Target store - where they do the calculations and give me a 200 dollar gift card - so I go ahead and trade in the older iPad and get last years iPad mini for 99 dollars

For those of you coming up with no stores in the search results (I was getting the same thing until I stumbled across the following), this might help:

Go to the main Target "find a store" link: [www.target.com] and select the check box for "Target Mobile". This yielded results for me that the I did not get from trade in program link.

Now I don't know that this is conclusive but the small print in the weekly ad merely states that the offer is valid at all stores with Target Mobile. I think I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow with my 1st gen iPad.

Couldn't have been easier.

I walked into Target's electronics section and the two guys there knew all about it. I was out the door in a few minutes.

If you've backed up and restored your iPad prior to showing up, go through the setup procedure so you can show them Settings>About so they can quickly verify the model and capacity.

How long are the Target gift cards valid?

In CA, most are good forever. Some types are not. Ideally, I'd trade in my iPad1 now and get a miniR.

Otherwise I'd probably cave and get an Air now instead of waiting for Air2.

$235 for my iPad3. Only $35 more than my iPad1. I suppose that's really because I'd get $200 for the iPad1.

Alternately, I could just show them, then Erase All Data, right?

I erased all data first by doing a Restore in iTunes at home. When I got to the store the guy said he wanted to see the screen to verify which model it was, so I went through the setup screens (no iTunes/WiFi connection required.)

Edit: Sorry, reading comprehension at low tide this afternoon. Yes, I suppose you could do the other way, too!

How long are the Target gift cards valid? ...

I was told there's no expiration. They also give you a printout that'll save your bacon if you lose the card.

I took my first gen iPad to Target and walked out 10 min later with a $200 gift card. They didn't have the Tmobile iPad to purchase, so I went across the street to Tmobile and got stymied. Tmobile requires a credit check to get the free 200 mb data and my credit is frozen. The guy didn't know which credit agency Tmobile uses and I didn't want to unfreeze them all. So, I'll try to find out which one it is and then go get the iPad Air.

I think I paid $300 for the first gen wifi iPad; I bought it at Verizon when the 2nd gen came out and they were dropping the price weekly. If I remember that price correctly, we got a heck of a deal being able to use it for years for $100.

Mine shows an expiration of 4/2022. So, it will certainly last!

Yes. Just make sure it works/turns on etc and isn't terribly banged up.

The back casing on ours wasn't pristine, had a minor dent in it and for two weeks the volume controls on the side didn't work because my wife dropped it ... I bent the case back a little, another small crease added but the volume controls then worked ... none of that mattered to the Target Guy.

I felt a little bad when I took the plastic Newertech "cover" off in the car before walking in and seeing months worth of dirt trapped there ... but not too bad.
