CREDIT card for travelers

I recently got a CapitalOne Visa that pays 1.5% on anything and you don't have to sign up every three months for special percentage on special categories. Also, my understanding that there is no charge on overseas purchases. They give you $100 back if you purchase $500 within the first three months of enrollment.

I'm trying it out.

Also, another interesting bit of information...I had a United CC which was going to charge me $79.00 for a year (the first year was free). They would not give me more than 2000.00 credit limit which was of no use to me...So when I called to say "don't renew" the assistance asked if I want the $2000.00 credit limit transferred to another Visa card. Flabbergasted...I said yes "no strings"???. So, had that amt transferred to my Amz Visa credit limit.

Have you ever heard of this happening? transferring a credit limit to add on to a current card?

PS: I have a checking account at CapitalOne. I am a customer.

Yes, such credit limit transfers are possible IFF both cards were issued by the same company (for example, Citi or Chase) and both cards have balances that are below the credit limits of each card before and after the transfer. However, since this is not a common procedure, not every CSR will be familiar with its availability.

I was going to recommend the Amazon Rewards Visa, the priceline rewards visa, and the fidelity amex - only the fidelity amex gives 2% back as cash on all transactions.

Sam,

I have a Fidelity Investments Awards American Express. 2% Cash Back. No revolving categories. No blackouts. All the advantages of an American Express card.

I still have a couple of other cash back cards but this is my primary. Seems to offer overall the best bang for the bucks.

I have an AmEx card but I have found overseas it isn't accepted MC and Visa are. Discover and AmEx no. Maybe if you are going to Paris or London some more traveled places but I seem to be at the ends of the earth.

I also got mad at Amer Exp in 2011. I bought computers for the 2% back and they never would give it to me. Have not used it since as I won't use a BA card. I carry grudges. smiley-rpg028

I've discovered Amex and Discover are not the cards to carry when off the beaten track as well.
But I carry my Bank of America visa debit for cash and have gotten by .

Sam,

Very true. Definitely not as popular as VISA and Mastercard but far more popular than Discover. I found that out in Italy. Like you, I had an issue with American Express and avoided them for a very long time. But, I saw they offered a card with good cash back and features and decided it was worth it to have one, especially since I shopped at Costco often and the only credit card they accept is American Express.

But, the Fidelity card, isn't actually an American Express card from American Express. It's through Fidelity but has the American Express "name plate" and features. Again, definitely worth a looksie. I no longer use my other American Express card since it doesn't offer as much cash back.

I'm leery of getting rid of the old American Express card since it is my oldest credit card and dumping it will actually hurt my credit rather than improve it. The card has no fee and it costs me nothing to keep it around. So, I may as well hold onto it for now.

I used a CapitalOne Visa while living in Europe.

No foreign transaction fees and 1.5% cash back. The only complaint was frequent locking of my account since my billing address was in the US.

While my favorite card is the Fidelity 2% Amex, for overseas travel I prefer the Capital One Venture Rewards Visa card due to better acceptance.

This card effectively gives 2% back on all charges, but you have to redeem to "erase" travel expenses. You can apply the 2% cash back as a credit to any hotel, flight etc travel expenses. It also has no foreign transaction fees.

It does have a $59 annual fee (free 1st year), but I find it worthwhile given my Visa spending levels.

Good help here. I've already got too many cards, but always looking for a better deal. I've had Amex since '79, and they have stood by me a few times saving me $, so I can't complain. I use my credit union's Visa card overseas mostly simply because it's accepted about everywhere. In Japan, paying for highway tolls with Amex is as fast as cash. But alas, I get no "cash back" on any of me cards. Got to research this, thanks!

On my recent trip abroad, Capital One kept repeatedly putting my card on hold. I had notified them where I was going to be but their algorithm kept flagging me anyway. A couple of times it was embarrassing.

Not everyone can call them from overseas like they assume is so easy. I did find out that if you stay on the line long enough past all the prompts, you can get through to a live person with Skype.
