Update on Free 200MB data from T-Mobile

In reference to this thread: [forums.macresource.com]

I got my free SIMs today and popped one into my iPad 3. Here are the steps I did (BTW, I'm still on iOS 6, not sure if that matters):

Turned off iPad. Put in SIM, restarted iPad. Went to Settings, Cellular Data and turned it on and turned Wi-Fi off. At the top it said it was searching for carrier, then found T-Mobile. Went to Safari, and it popped up a window telling me to activate and select a plan. After filling in my info (no CC or mailing address requested), I was greeted with this screen.

I found it odd that is seemingly gave me a phone number. Also, when I clicked the link that says "Mobile Internet Management", I tried to login with the password and PIN I entered and it doesn't seem to work. And finally, the part that says I've received a promotional pass... is this going to expire on me in 30 days? Is there anything else I need to do?

Otherwise, for now it seems to be working fine.

I got one for my iPad 2 (bought the SIM in person, though, as I missed whatever the free deal was).

I got a phone number, as well, but my plan (when I look on the tmobile web site) lists "data only," so I don't think the number could be used.

I wouldn't worry about the "promotional pass" bit. When I bought mine, the sales girl said several times that this was to allow me to "try out" the T-mobile data plan, and if I liked it, I could get more each month (for like $30/2GB, I think). I asked her to clarify, though, whether or not I would continue to get 200 MB free each month, regardless of whether or not I purchased more, and she said, "oh yeah, definitely" (or similarly reassuring words).

I was a little concerned that if I hit the 200 MB limit, they would let me keep using data, and bill me for it. So I called and asked, and they said, "oh, no...you won't get billed, but your speed will drop to 2G speed." So it appears that you get a lot more than 200MB per month, it's just that the first 200 MB are the only fast ones.

I have t-mobile for my iPhone 3GS, and I'm pretty sure 2G is all I get with it. It's slow, but usable.

I'll start another thread asking what to turn off/disable to avoid sucking up the cellular data. It seems to get used up *very* quickly, even if you aren't actively doing anything to use it.

Thanks for posting.

I installed Onavo Extend to help reduce the data usage on my iPad3 using Tmobile.

I have t-mobile for my iPhone 3GS, and I'm pretty sure 2G is all I get with it. It's slow, but usable.

Interestingly, that's how I got started with iPhones. We bought 3 used iPhone 2G's right around the time the 3GS was out. I kept one, unlocked and jailbroke it, then activated it on T-Mobile. I actually activated a different phone, but took out the SIM and put it in the iPhone. Then I went online and said I had a Motorola RAZR, which let me get a free data plan. Yeah, it was only Edge network speed, but it was free. And now, I can say, "It's only 3G speed, but it's free". I don't expect to use up 200MB per month on the iPad, but it's nice to know that even if I do, it looks like I would just drop to 2G speed, which is ok.

My wife is psyched because I got her a SIM too, and she is really looking forward to some free cellular data. She uses her iPad a lot more than I do. Mostly at home, but she uses it a lot at work too. With 200MB free, I'll probably start using it more at work too.

Not sure what it was, it just came up automatically. When I put the SIM in my wife's iPad, I'll make a note of the URL.

Thanks. I could see part of the link in your screen capture, but not all of it. Might be in the browser history as well. Appreciate the help.

I had to laugh - I spent two whole YEARS with an Edge-only iOS device:

My original iPhone.

Slow but usable is a kind way of putting it. To be fair, there were more mobile-versions of web sites designed for crappy Blackberry devices; going to those via Edge didn't seem SO slow. But going to those same sites today even on some 3G connections is painful.

These are cell phones without the phone part - you always have/need a phone number for the account and identifier.

I have a prepaid T-mobile SIM that I got a few months back…will it work for an iPad, or do I need to get a different "tablet-only prepaid" SIM card? I keep finding different links on different sites that take me to different product pages on Tmobile's site, but I'm having a hard time figuring out if these are actually different SIMs.

Anyone?

I think they're the same. But there are 3 sizes of SIMs: "regular", micro, and nano. The nano SIMs are for the new iPad mini's I think. I think my iPhone takes the "regular" size one. Or at least my original iPhone did, because I still have that SIM, and it's definitely bigger than the micro SIM my iPad 3 took.

OK…I was aware of the different sizes, but wasn't sure if there was any other functional difference that might make a SIM that works to activate a phone different from one that activates an iPad.

It was free, so maybe I'll give it a try!
