iPhoto Library from 10.5 into 10.6.8 w/o iLife.

I need to get the photos from the backup of a 1stGen iPad into a new 16gb Air.
The backup was made on an iBook running 10.5 and the corresponding iLife suite.
Since iTunes 11 is needed -and not supported in 10.5- I tried doing it from my machine running 10.6.8.
No photos were synced, I think because I don't have iPhoto.

Right now I'm pondering exporting the whole library keeping format and names, but I don't fully understand the pitfalls... so I would appreciate any suggestions to get the photos back.

Thanks!

The old iPad's (or of any iDevice's) backup only contains settings and such, not the "big" data (photos, songs, videos, apps). In other words, when you "restore from a backup" in iTunes, iTunes just re-gathers what's needed and puts it back on the iPad, it doesn't keep copies of that stuff IN the backup, because it's already "backed up" being in the regular library. Hope that makes sense.

But I think you understand all of that, but the "getting stuff from a backup" seemed unclear, in a literal sense of how iTunes works.

Yes, I think you'll need to buy iPhoto. Do it from the App Store. It's cheap. Point it at the old iPhoto library, which will get updated, and iTunes can then use it to sync photos to the 'Air.

Right now I'm pondering exporting the whole library keeping format and names, but I don't fully understand the pitfalls..

iPhoto is $15, and the right way to handle this: [itunes.apple.com]

And you'd still need it to let iTunes be able to move the photos over if I'm not mistaken?

Yes, that was unclear. Shoulda been "stuff from backup.app"
I already tried the app store, but as far as I can tell I can only buy the newest version, and that needs the mav'ricks.
I just tried exporting the photos from the old iPhoto, but it stopped because it "could not create the file image003".
Oh boy, this would've been easy if only I had turned on iCloud backup...

Kinda tough to update from that far back without a few more in-between pieces perhaps. Look for a copy of iLife '08 or '11. Shouldn't cost too much. Or if you've got a system disk for the iBook maybe there's an installer on it?

I just tried exporting the photos from the old iPhoto, but it stopped because it "could not create the file image003".

Depending on how many images you want from the old library, you might try to deselect that file and see if it'll continue. But if it keeps choking you won't get far if the database got corrupted.

You can also just open up the iPhoto library directly with the Finder (right click on it, Show package contents) and be presented with the inner workings. The folder of originals will be in there somewhere. You'll still want a copy of iPhoto that runs on 10.6 eventually, so ...

Great! I forgot the Originals and Modified folders. All I remembered was the nested folders.
I will eventually get iPhoto, but not until I upgrade either the OS or the machine...
the OS is free, but the expense on software upgrades will be as much as a new machine...
Thanks for your help deckeda!!

Check MegaMacs website for older versions of iPhoto.

Althoug deckeda clearly stated ilife 08, it did not register until I went to the site recommended by GeneL.
So I dragged the iphoto I had in the backup, showed up with no icon. Restarted on single user mode, repaired permissions, restarted. There's the icon.
Open up iphoto, turn out is version 7.1.5, part of ilife 08, and works fine with 10.6.8.
So this should end well.
Thanks everybody!!

Wow, very cool. Yeah, I wouldn't have thought you could shoehorn it on that way, without the installer. Hopefully it will all work out for you. Good luck!

Used to be 'it just works' with a Mac.

No complains here...
Everything worked as it should and in the process, I got rid of the need to use an iBook to handle the family media.
Once I erase the ipad backup, it will take 50mb in my computer, while the media resides in an external.
Nothing new, I just had not set it.
Thanks again everyone!
