Thirty years after drawing an alleged 670,000 music fans into the middle of nowhere in California, the 1983 installment of the US Festival — a four-day event over Memorial Day Weekend that year — will be commemorated next month with a DVD concert film featuring performances by U2, The Clash, English Beat, INXS, Divinyls and more.

“US Festival 1983: Days 1-3,” already out digitally via iTunes, will be issued on DVD on Dec. 3 by MVD Entertainment as an officially sanctioned released by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak’s UNUSON Corporation, which put on both the Labor Day 1982 festival and its 1983 follow-up.

The new film collects 23 performances from 14 acts spread over the fest’s New Wave, Heavy Metal and Rock days (the Country Day is excluded entirely), with performances by Men at Work, Stray Cats, Berlin, Judas Priest, Triumph, Missing Persons, Quarterflash and more.

I'm pretty sure I have The Clash's complete performance on a VHS tape that I transferred to DVDR.

I hope their version improves upon your version. Wonder what's happening with 1982? That one had the B52's and the Police.

My grandparents happened to live in that "middle of nowhere" town, so US '83 was my first concertgoing experience. I was too young to have a really critical eye/ear, but I do remember the Clash talking a lot of smack about all the other bands!

I need to grab some of those segments off of iTunes. This time, I'll skip the Triumph set, which seemed to go on forever and kind of bored me to tears. At least the Scorpions followed with a jet fighter flyover to wake everyone back up again!

Too bad they can't/won't release the whole footage. This was a great event.

Was informally asked twice to be part of the roving entertainment for this event. Once was at a juggling festival in San Jose. A recruiter was asking all of the jugglers if they would like to perform some place in souther California for some big music event. Sounded too hot to me, and I took a pass Several of my friends went, though.

The second time was when working for the New Games Foundation. A rep from Unuson came to sound us out about how we might put on a New Games event during a rock concert. Nothing ever came of it though.

I'd be interested in knowing if the DVD will include crowd scenes and shots of some of the roving entertainment.

Hear, hear! Graduated from high school that year; my senior year had an AMAZING soundtrack!

I drove by it on my way to a youth retreat out past Barstow that weekend (Memorial Day). Looking back, I'd much rather have gone to the festival.
