I just received an e-mail inviting me to Great American Meatout day event (March 20) which is a benefit in a bar to raise money for the Chicago Veggie Pride Parade. Unfortunately I have orchestra rehearsal that night but I'm interested to hear what sort of meatout plans you-all have.

no wild boar or game birds this year. Bummer on the wild boar. Kalua wild boar is incredible. Sturgeon is pretty tasty. Firm and meaty.

"Veggie Pride"? Really?

So I went to Wikipedia to check it out:

As a pragmatic vegetarian, (I still like my milk and cheese.), I find this kind of "Help! I'm being repressed!" grandstanding most offensive.
There are many good things about a vegetarian diet- it's not all boiled lentils. I've lost 40 pounds since last March, mostly by change of diet. (I'm still firmly against eating Kale in any month that contain a vowel.)
Please save the "Pride" for those who are genuinely discriminated against, because of how or where or what they were born, or some other innate thing that sets them apart as Other.

I'm going out for a cheeseburger; it's been two years since I last had one. Cheeseburger Pride!

I don't hate beef, where did you get that idea? I last had beef at my Sister's house, on Christmas. Yum!
(As I said, I'm a Pragmatic Vegetarian.) Before that, to celebrate my new Boat, I fried up a hamburger on the freshly working alcohol stove. (The day before, when the stove was still wonky, I had a can of cold Dinty Moore.)
Two years ago, I hung out with some people and ate cheeseburgers with them. Life changed, I no longer hang around with them, so I just got out of the cheeseburger habit. I'm sure that a cheeseburger now would be just ducky.

You know what gave me gut grief? Milk.
I hadn't drunk much more than a splash in an occasional cup of tea for decades. Then, when I went on my new diet, it took a couple of weeks for Mr. Gut to remember just how much I liked milk when much younger, especially with potato chips. I'm up to over a pint a day now, and I seem to have stabilized at 148 pounds, which is around where I was at, at 40.

Seriously, there _is_ a problem with people eating too much meat. Meat has gotten very expensive, (Hamburger has gone up 30% around here since Christmas.), and the industry is despicable.

But I am in no way anti-meat. For me, it's now for special occasions, like Christmas, and Birthdays, and new boats, and getting laid.

I'm friends with several vegetarians.. Some very nice people. We don't try to change each others diets. It can be hard making cookies for 'em around christmas though.. Have to remember who's OK with eggs, butter, etc and who's not. I can usually find or make something nice though.

As currently constituted, factory farming in the US entails the systematic torture and killing of billions of animals. People who buy the products of this factory farming system are, with their dollars, effectively supporting this torture and killing. There are many, many videos that show the shocking mistreatment of animals in factory farm environments.

This is in fact a separate issue from "eating meat." There are numerous scenarios in which a human being killing an animal for food does not contravene basic concepts of decency and compassion.

Factory farming ain't one of them.

I ate the products of factory farming for decades, I certainly make no claim to "moral superiority" compared with meat eaters. Heck, I LOVE burgers, chicken, fish, you name it. But once I learned more about how this food was produced, I knew I could no longer be complicit in that process.

My two cents. It's a free country, do whatever makes sense to you.

I thought the Ron Swanson quote was funny and apropos to this thread, and didn't see your post until after I posted. Please don't think my funny was in response to your thoughtful post, because it was not. You make some very good points. I haven't been able to give up meat due to extreme carnivorous tendencies, but I do wish I could afford to purchase it at one of the small humane farms which deliver to Baltimore homes. I do hate the idea that animals suffer so badly so I can enjoy my dinner; I simply don't seem to have the werewithal to give it up entirely. More power to you.
