The first three things you would buy if you won a million dollars
Posted by: CharlieStango

I am working on an advertising campaign and trying to get some ideas. What would be the first three things you would buy if you won a million dollars in cash. It has to be things you would purchase new, not paying off bills or mortgage. Thanks

First I'd fill up the tank with premium gas. Then I'd use the rest as a down payment on a house here in Oakland. Oh, and I'd buy a nice pair of Adidas.

The first thing I'd want would be tax relief.

It depends on where the house is. Even if you had a million dollars *after* taxes, it would not be enough to buy a really nice house with a view anywhere west of the crest of the Oakland hills.

A million is not that much money any more. I would want to hold on to the money, and buy a used luxury car, put a down payment on a house, and maybe a ski boat (or sailboat if I could find an open berth somewhere in the SF bay area).

Oh, sure... go and be practical and responsible...

I guess if you're going to be THAT way;
1. 50% in a competant brokerage house's hands
2. 20% in higher risk investments, but not getting nuts.
3. 30% to build myself a house with a nice shop (I'd pay for tools before bothering with furniture...).

probably nothing extravagant. A million dollars ain't what it used to be. Besides the fact that a big chunk would come out in taxes.

We made a large chunk of money last year from selling off some real estate. We paid off both of our vehicles and my wife finally got the kitchen of her dreams. We also bought another rental property. The rest is in the bank.

Snazzy car with built-in gps rather than dashboard gps.
High end video system.
College/grad school for my kid.

Bank the rest for retirement.

An unlimited travel pass on some airline (do they still have those?) or at least a round-the-world ticket.

Wow, I just realized how good my life actually is. I can't actually think of anything else very big in the tangible possessions department. Even my first choice is not really a "thing."

Invest it in anything tax free, well almost anything.

A girl I know took $1 million she got as a settlement (which are tax free) and invested it, gets about $80k a year in interest to live on.

I could learn to live with that.

The money, not her.

House on a private island on a lake, in a temperate climate.

A Jaguar convertible.

Invest the rest in mutual funds. We don't have enough for retirement. Probably better scratch the island. And the convertible?

House. That would probably take up most of it.

Maybe just invest it all.

I would like a killer home theater too, but that would require the home part first.

I would adopt a baby/child (maybe 2 or 3), remodel our house and buy things like new (matching) furniture for each room.

Really, I would pay off our house first, but you said not to put that...

Why go through the trouble of adopting? With a million dollars you could buy many, many babies (at $15k each). :-). Just kidding...

1. 2 new cars, one for each of us
2. Remodel the house (take off the roof and add a second story.)
3. Buy a summer cottage on Lake Michigan.
4. Turn our 1 week time-share into a full-ownership condo in Key West.
