E. B. White wrote a marvelous account of working in a ship running from Washington to Alaska; I think it was in the essay entitled "The Years of Wonder."

I don't know if I'd prefer a ferry; I like trains.

Mint, it's also on my list of places to visit, along with the Lake District (England, not Minnesota), Rome, Florence, Venice, the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller…
