Quick release fastener for wood cabinet

I have a 1/4 inch sheet of wood attached to the back of my computer desk that covers all my wires and stuff. Right now, It's attached with 2 phillips head screws on the right side only. Only the right side b/c the left side is against the wall and hard to get to.

I'd like some kind of quick release fastener so i can easily pop the panel off and on when i need to instead of getting a screwdriver from my toolbox every time. Is there something that would work for that? My lack of search results is probably b/c i just have no idea what to search for.

Could you use a few Velcro strips? I don't know how heavy it is, but Velcro can hold a fair amount of weight, in a setup like you are taking about.

Thumb screws can be used in place of regular screws. However they are usually in the form of bolts rather than wood screws. I don't think I've ever seen wood screws with a thumbscrew on them.

Use threaded inserts with thumbscrews. Get both in ΒΌ / 20 size and you will be good to go. Dril and insert the threaded inserts (there are several styles-flat, barbed, barrel - and then use the thumbscrew, perhaps with a washer, though the plywood. Instead of a thumbscrew you can also use 'jig' handles with star, lever, etc. from places like Rocker.com.

Use french cleats. Cut strips of wood at 45 degree angles and mount two strips on the wall and two on the back of the plywood. Put a finger hole in the top of the plywood panel and then just lift it off when you need access. No tools needed once you have it done.

rare earth magnets, metal, glue + creativity

Sometimes it is what it is...

I thought about velcro. Just not 'tight" enough. Can't use a french cleat. The cabinet isn't built that way. The desktop overhangs about 6 inches. And i don't want magnets + computer stuff.

I think the threaded inserts and some type of thumbscrew would be ideal.

Can you put a long machine screw through from the front of the desk, with an ordinary washer and nut on the back, followed by the wood panel, then a wingnut?

Screw eye (use fingers; may need washer) or hanger bolt with wing nut:

What about small eye screws in the wood that simply slide onto L-shaped cuphooks on the desk overhang? Just slide the panel sideways (in relation to the desk) to remove it or reattach. Less suitable if you're in earthquake country, or you could just have a bit of Velcro at one end to grab the panel when it's seated in place.

It is more costly then the other options, but I thought as a one off solution for a particular location that it was worth considering. smiling smiley
