Restoring Lion on a new Seagate 1TB hybrid drive for my MBP. Have to go with Lion first, then upgrade to Mavericks.

It's showing 70 to 103 hours to complete. I've got a 4mb line, upload and download.

What kind of servers does Apple use for this? Horrible.

Hopefully it won't actually take that long. It will probably have spurts of productivity that shorten the time considerably.

But, before the next time you need to do something like this, you're going to want to create a bootable installer so you don't have to use the "emergency" option of recovery over the internet.

I predict/fear you will regret this.

A 4mb line is pretty slow and you probably aren't even getting that much. It isn't Apples servers. We have a 100mb line at work and can install an OS in about 15 to 20 minutes.

Why do you need to go to Lion first? Should be able to use a 10.9 recovery partition and go straight there.

As long as you have already "purchased" Mavericks, you don't need to go through installing Lion first. I just reinstalled Mavericks to a new, clean drive, even though the MBP came with Snow Leopard. I did have a bootable Mavericks USB installer, though I didn't know how to use it, so when starting the reinstall the MBP first connected to Apple's servers and started a Mavericks download/install.

If you want to use the "internet recovery" option, your serial number information is transmitted to Apple. It will then install ONLY the original OS version that it shipped with along with the "bundled" applications that it came with when new.

Your first problem is believing that time frame.

The second problem is believing the tech that said you HAD to install Lion then Mavericks.

"If you use Internet Recovery to reinstall OS X, it installs the version of OS X that originally came with your computer. After installation is finished, use the Mac App Store to install related updates or later versions of OS X that you have previously purchased."

"Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X

If your computer came with OS X Lion or later and you erase your hard disk and install OS X, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store."
