help - ubantu on osx

I'm doing this in order that I might S-Off my Android. Other methods I've tried haven't worked.
Rumrunner from ubantu was suggested.
sort of Jailbreak.

this is a Terminal command I used from that page.

hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o ~/path/to/target.img ~/path/to/ubuntu.iso

but the resultant file when double clicked, yields "no mountable file systems".

let me say at the onset, I'm no Terminal wiz, but when I used the command string, Terminal did show activity enough that I had a result the same size as the source. Still …...

The ISO file is a disk image that needs to be copied to some type of bootable media like a USB stick or DVD. You can use Disk Utillity for this -- no need for the Terminal.

Then you boot from the media to install Ubuntu on a partition.

Edit: At first I had a link to the same Ubuntu page you linked to, because, um, I did't read.
Now that I've read it, I can tell you that you don't need to use the Terminal so much. You can create the bootable media with the regular Disk Utility app.

But, you can also just use the ISO, as it is, to create a virtual machine in your choice of virtualization software.

I suggest doing that with Virtual Box rather than creating an actual Ubuntu partition.

Virtual Box is free virtualization software if you don't have a spare disk or partition.

If I were you I would download virtualbox and install ubuntu within it. Then install rumrunner and passthrough the usb device of your phone to the ubuntu vm.

I'm hesitant to concur. I've been running ubuntu under virtualbox for a while, and it's not the best solution IMHO. Took a while to get it to properly let me access other drives on my system. And a recent update of virtualbox pretty much killed ubuntu. It still works, but the screen doesn't redraw properly anymore. Thankfully, I was able to find a port of the program I needed ubuntu for, and use it under X11 via MacPorts.

On my 2011 MBP that would be my only option because Apple won't let me install an OS from a usb drive and I don't have a working superdrive. I don't even know if having a superdrive would matter... isn't windows the only thing supported in bootcamp. I guess my question is, What would be the best solution on a Mac to get Ubuntu running where you can hook up an android phone via USB and run the Rumrunner app?

Fritz: What kind of phone? Looks like there's Mac solutions depending on what you got like the Revone App.

HTC One. Revone is only good with Hboot 1.54 and under.
I'm at 1.55. Though I can flash back, the results for others have been hit and miss.
The miss part I'm not so willing to end up at.
There is Revone, Rumrunner, Firewater and Moonshine.
The later 3 "may" work with my phone.
So far Firewater failed, Rumrunner is a not sure.
Figured I'd try this method that someone posted in XDA.

when I try to use/open the .iso or the .img I made from it with DU, I get this:

Could not validate source - Invalid argument

But now I'm following this:
[osxdaily.com]

Seems to be underway.

alas. Installed and running, but going nowhere fast. Can't launch Firefox.

FYI: It's flawless under Parallels. And the app has a link to download a VM with Ubuntu pre-installed.
