What is the Ryder Cup? That's the race with the boats, right?

I think it's a race with rental trucks.

Not so's you'd notice. I watched a few highlights from yesterday; how humiliating. I did notice the weather was rather nasty, too. I don't think I could ever be that devoted to having fun.

Tiger has never done well when he has to play with others and not just against them.

Yeah, there was no joy at our Ryder Cup tailgate party either.
Besides that, it rained off & on all day.

Looks like they're taking lessons from US basketball.

Just to make sure everyone knows, I am from the UK. I'm not a devoted fan of golf and I've never played it myself but I occasionally like to watch it on TV and have an extra interest when it's the Ryder Cup. I used to have the impression that the US was the best at golf with more depth in their numbers of good players although Europe could still produce an outstanding individual player. Europe though has now won the competition three times on the trot and this last time seemed pretty emphatic. I'm sure the population of Europe is greater than the US, somebody could probably come up with the figures, but I got the impression that the US was more geared up for golf playing across a wider percentage of the population. So is it that a lesser pecentage of the top US players volunteered for this compared with their European counterparts?

I think the announcers hit the nail on the head with some of their comments. Lots of the places on the European tour that hold tournaments have only one or two hotels so all the players stay at the same place and that promotes a better feel between the players, hence they tend to play better in a team event. Seems like the US players don't know how to play team events well, and don't excel in match play. Maybe it's just a mindset thing, or they don't have the same fire for winning the Ryder Cup that the Europeans have.

Until this weekend. Tiger was by FAR the most successful player on our side, and may have produced more points than any player on the winning side as well.

As for the quality of the US side, one stat they gave is that the US has only 5 players ranked in the world's top twenty. They sent the best they had.

The stats do show though that they hold the top three places. The highest European is 8th but there are 8 Europeans in the top 20.

If the Europeans (the individuals participating in the Ryder Cup) could putt in the weekly tournaments like they do in the Ryder Cup, then they would ALL have won majors and be very successful on the PGA Tour.

For some totally unknown reason, they become completely amazing with their putting and chipping during this event . . . it doesn't matter if it is a European course or an American course. Ungodly, I tell you . . .

They totally kicked our a$$. There is no joy in Mudville . . . the mighty Casey has struck out . . .

What's all this about teams and players? Golf on TV is only a prelude to napping. Didn't you guys get the memo on that?

The greens at the Ryder Cup courses tend to be slower than at most US PGA events. That can contribute to poorer US perfromance, but is really no excuse.

I suppose the commaraderie (sp?) can make a difference in performance, but certainly managing your game is the biggest contributor to top quality play. Make a few bad decisions and now you have to play catch up. The mental funk sets in, and you are sunk. It is very, very tough to turn around your mental approach and keep your rythym in top form. Some part of your game seems to keep failing when you are behind.
