Railroad overpasses in disrepair 26th Street residents worry about safety amid area's erosion
'It's a blight'
Councilman wants companies to clean, repair properties

October 19, 1998|By Ivan Penn | Ivan Penn,SUN STAFF

Over 15 years, residents along Baltimore's 26th Street have watched their sidewalk sink 6 feet as the earth has eroded around the railroad tracks that snake through their daily comings and goings.

Iron rails and a concrete wall have collapsed, leaving gaping holes in the residents' protection from a 30-foot drop onto the CSX train tracks.

Structural problems around the train track overpasses, which residents in the Harwood section of Charles Village have fought for years to have corrected, are believed to be among the worst in Baltimore's residential areas.

No, I get what he means. I understand these sites need to generate revenue, but I swear that one day I'll hear that a vehicle from another world has landed on the National Mall in D.C., I'll rush to my Mac, and go to click on the "stream live" button, and I'll see a non-skippable 60-second commercial for Depends Undergarments before I get to see first contact.

Funny, I didn't get a commercial. I hadn't watched it because it's been on my FB feed all day long and I've seen it a few times. But out of curiosity I just gave it a go and: no commercial. huh.

If ads are so offensive, then try getting your information by reading instead of watching. Then you can skip the video ads. Watching video ads is a choice and if you want that infotainment, it's generally not free.

That's right. It costs money to run those servers. It costs money to send those bits over the internet to your computer. That money's got to come from somewhere!

Here in Pittsburgh, the railroad bridges and associated right-of-way structures look like they haven't been updated in a century. Sounds like Baltimore.

You truly prefer two to one ratio of ad to content?

I just hope we can one day have ten to one ads to content so everyone can get paid properly.

Terrible but also no surprise. There's a hill east of Cleveland along I-90 that has 3 houses on top of it. They cut the side of the hill to build the interstate. The hill is nice loose shale.

At this point all three houses have less than 10 feet of back yard left. The rest of their yards is 300 feet down the hill. Structure always seeks equilibrium. Sometimes equilibrium is all the bits lying in a heap of rubble.

really?

the clip is the clip, it's what they've got. You want them to add filler to justify the less-than-a minute video ad?
I just think it's funny that people voluntarily sit and watch these ads, then complain about it.
You're all getting hysterical as if you're tied to the chair and "powers that be" force you to watch this. What's up with that? Make other choices for yourself.

Can we please get the subject line changed to "ad to content ratio?"

Once in awhile I post what I think is an interesting story, and those who respond talk about everything but the story. Oh well. :-)

I have seen this clip now for two days on different channels and I have to turn off the sound. Maybe one of those cars were hers, but jeez, she's obnoxious...

Advertising aside, it's an amazing video. Frankly, I'd be screaming as if someone was murdered, too, had I been there. If you were there when it was happening, you had no way of knowing how much was going to slide down to the tracks.

The folks in the houses don't even know when they will be allowed back home.

The residents should be allowed back in their houses in mid-July. I don't know what I would do if that happened to me. Where do you go? What do you do with the pets? What about burglars and looters, with no one on the block to see what's going on?

As loudly as that lady screamed, I think I would be right with her if I saw half the street disappear like that. You don't know where the landslide will decide to stop, and you can only pray that it stops short of the ground beneath your feet.

The City of Baltimore and CSX Corp. have been wrangling for years over repair of CSX's inventory of decaying right-of-way. CSX jealously defends its rights over the land until its decades of neglect cause a problem, and then CSX says it's the city's problem to fix. I live near some tracks and can testify that CSX is a terrible neighbor to have.

I agree that ad content should be limited to less than half the editorial content. That's the general rule for newspapers, though some papers strive for less than a third.

Didn't sound like that at all.

I heard a woman scream in a Safeway store because she thought a kid's stuffed toy was a mouse.

It was, just not a real mouse. But the scream was real.

There was no doubt the woman in the store was terrified.

The woman in the video- surprised.
