Favorite romance movies?
Posted by: davemchine

I'd like to get a few romance movies. I'm partial to older movies but open to anything. It could also be partial comedy. Mans Favorite Sport might not be strictly a romance movie but it is my favorite that combines the two. Thanks for any suggestions.

Ukulele music I couldn't find anywhere else.

I assume you are going for stuff that is not the most well-known, so ……
Chances Are
Parent Trap (1998)
Heart and Souls
Once
Across the Universe (Watch this on a big screen and rock out the beatles soundtrack)
Umbrellas of Cherbourg (this is a must see).

Princess Bride (Definitely)
What Women Want
Or any other comedic film with a strong male lead whose life goes kablooie and still gets the girl. Cary Grant was great at that.

NOTHING by Nicholas Sparks, please.

My Best Friend's Wedding - perfect for me because for whatever reason I _really_ never liked America's Sweetheart JRo, and I love me some Cameron Diaz, so the roles they play are perfect.

Something About Mary - not really a romance, but it's a classic and it's got Cameron Diaz again...

Bridget Jones Diary (only - not the second one)

Maybe getting a little dated, but I enjoy Phantom of the Opera...and the first half of My Fair Lady...

Another vote for Casablanca.

Up is a great suggestion, Yoyodyne! What a sweet story.

L.A. Story is one of my most very favorite romantic comedies. I love the ending, soooo romantic.

Moonstruck is probably my very favorite, except for Casablanca of course.

I thought The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was romantic, but my husband loathed it, so YMMV.

After looking at all the suggestions, I've come to the tentative conclusion that it is ridiculous to ask for favorite romantic movies. The fact is, virtually every successful movie has a bit of romance in it, so every movie qualifies as a romantic movie.

No mention of Rocky? I am still use that as my half-serious/half joke response when someone asks me that question. Many greats, Groundhog Day doesn't get enough notice in this respect. Notting Hill may be my favorite among this bunch.

Very true. I think the best love stories have a lot of anguish. Someone having to mask and squash their desire.

Like "The Bridges of Madison County," or Ducky in "Pretty in Pink" which didn't work out all the well for Ducky (no justice whatsoever). Reese Witherspoon and Tess Harper as sisters grieving their mutual lost love in "Man in the Moon" is heartbreaking.

Forbidden love. "Brief Encounter" Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard fall in love despite their both having families. David Lean directed this movie and it really grabs you. Of course we know he did "Dr. Zhivago," so he got the love thing down. "Remains of the Day."

And if anyone hasn't seen "Claudine" with the legendary Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones, with the smashing Curtis Mayfield, Gladys Knight & The Pips soundtrack, they they're just missing out on a great flick and a great love story.

Dang, the entire "Claudine" movie streaming right here (Diahann Carroll is so f*&^%$g fine). [www.youtube.com]
