Forum update? Change the digs or leave them alone?

This forum tech (Phorum) was OLD when it was plopped down here by our GRACIOUS HOSTS... very thankfully, and forever in their DEBT...

But... what more modern 'social' features from message boards, to web, to apps would you like to see implemented for Macresource Boards?

Think about the pros/cons of FB, Twitter, more updated sites like Apple support boards, etc....

Curious if the familiarity of this place IS THE ATTRACTION; and if moving the furniture around would drive away the cast of characters.

I like how clean and relatively uncluttered Phorum is. I strongly dislike most other message board platforms, especially ones that have tons of "sharing" buttons/features. I don't need the ability to splatter my comments across multiple sites--one is enough.

I don't think there is much to be gained by switching to another platform, but I suppose there could be things I'm not thinking about. The strength of this place is the people that post and their comments...the technology is a secondary consideration, and we should be careful not to switch the two.

Needs a poll.

Don't eff with it, that IS THE ATTRACTION. I remember a lot of tweaking being done at the beginning to make it as familiar as possible.

WHAT THE HECK! Why change it. It works, and there's nothing more we need it to do. Remember how we got this place in the first place. It's fine. Thanks for asking though.

I like the forum but I could do with two additional features. I wish there was an optional mobile interface. Perhaps something like slashdot. Much easier to read on an iPhone. I also wish there was a chat room for us insomniacs to use. I had considered setting one up.

As much as I love most things Apple, I absolutely HATE their support forum. I can never find anything useful there. Here, on the other hand, I have found the solution to most of the problems I have had in the last eight and a half years.

I'd like to have the software better able to recognize that I'm on an iPhone.

Please don't change it. I'm really starting to get tired of sites and apps that change things because someone thinks "different must mean better!".

I can understand the desire by mobile users to have it work better for them. Well, not really because without exception, every "mobile" website I've ever visited SUCKED. But if they decide to offer a mobile version of this site. PLEASE make it optional. There's nothing worse than being forced to use the mobile version of a site. And almost as bad as that are the sites that offer a link to view the "full site", but as soon as you click on anything, it forces you back into the mobile version, with no way to see anything other than the main page in full site mode.

Familiarity is the attraction. Most of us are grownups. The phorum (and its denizens) are like that comfy old pair of shoes that aren't stylish, but have a lot of miles and memories on them. We'll never get rid of them. We may polish them, clean them. replace the soles, but we'll keep walking.

I couldn't agree more. I've never seen a forum layout that looks and works as well as Phorum.

Please don't change it.

I think the phorum software is a crucial ingredient to the forum's longevity. I'd be wary of any features that would change how people interact with the forum, though I wouldn't mind a mobile version.

Sometimes I roll my eyes at the arcane rituals involved in uploading and posting a photo, but still, I wouldn't change it. The fact that it takes a little more work means when somebody does post a photo, it is probably worth looking at.

I think the forum software should make every keyword a clickable link:

[forums.macresource.com]

:-)

Just kidding. But there are forums that do that! I hate it! You move your mouse, it happens to hover over some specific "hot word," and a bubble pops up with some ad, definition, link, etc.

I'm happy with it as is. If anything, I would like a way to indicate agreement which didn't involve quoting a post and agreeing. I know everyone hates "Like" buttons, but an "I agree" or something like that would make for less noise on a thread. But this isn't a huge thing for me, just a very minor detail/thought that I have no particular anxiety about.

I agree with what's already been said:

1) Leave it alone - it's so clean and easy to find stuff here
2) A mobile aware version would be really great - see below

To see what I mean by mobile aware, take a look at ArsTechnica on a mobile device. Rotate the screen from horizontal to portrait, and the content adjusts itself. That would be cool here, but I understand we're looking at two different types of content (article headlines with small text and pictures there vs. long flowing text with down-scrolling here).

Please, please leave this be. Please do not change the looks. Add some features that others may want, but don't change the looks and operation of the page I'm seeing now.

Very much- Yes. I also like that there is a relatively low total official limit as to what can be stored here: 4.88 MB. Learn to touch up your editing and captioning skills; all that is needed is OSX Preview.
What can be done in-page with BBcode here is quite limited; no inline YouTube videos for instance, which could be incredibly annoying.
Oh, there are some irritations- for instance, sometimes the software barfs on non-standard characters and fonts.

KILL the @#$%& ridiculously unnecessary nanny filter and I'll be happy.

Although, I agree that the phorum software is a horrid antiquated mess - there is no way in the world that anyone would have the time to upgrade it.

Other forums (fora??) have indicators to show which threads you have read, which you have posted to and lots of other little goodies. The ability to imbed video... And, of course, new posts bring the thread to the top. Like the OP suggested, this forum software was never the best and the lack of development over the years has lead to it lagging further.

But it's also kinda true that all of that adds to the quaintness of the place...

One thing-the Auto Correct feature that's been added. Just like on phones, it' can be very annoying. Other than that, don't touch it!
