OT: Bathroom fixture disposal?
Posted by: Mark (nonick)

I just replaced the porcelain in my bathroom, but I don't know how to dispose of the old sinks? Can they be recycled? Do I need to take them to a dump? I live in NJ, FWIW.

Thanks in advance...

You could do as my neighbor down the street did and just leave them in the alley.

Check your town for a couple of nonprofits--one of them is called The Loading Dock, which sells lots of building materials and fixtures for pennies on the dollar. The other is Second Chance, which is more interested in antique stuff. You can get a tax deduction either way.

My standard curbside pickup allows toilets, sinks and old tile to be picked up as regular waste.

Call your service/city.

Many cities/towns have a "large item disposal" service.

Check to see if you have some kind of "recycling" store and donate it there. We have one here called "Habitat Store" -- I think they're connected with the charity.

Some plumbing stores buy used items for resale.

I second Habitat for Humanity's Re-Store as an outlet to recycle old fixtures.

I've put fixtures and furniture out at the curb and they magically disappear during the night.
Couches have a tendency to lose just the cushions, though. Picky pickers.

We have a business called Waste Not Want Not that will take a lot of stuff like that.

Our local transfer station charges $5 per item disposal fee. Some of the other suggestions above sound like better solutions if available to you.

I've also heard of people breaking them up and using them as fill (cover in heavy canvas and smash with sledge hammer), though I'd think there would be lots of sharp shards.

Best of luck!

Our garbage removal won't take them, and I missed our "junk collection" day this year. I'm going to try the local thrift and charities. Great ideas, all. Thanks.

Go to [www.freecycle.org] and see if there is a Freecycle chapter in your area. Post it and see if someone can use it.

Hey, I would actually buy a very good quality and good condition old-school high flow toilet for our spare bathroom.

Lots of that stuff does have value.

If you lived in Ma., you could come by and take the one in my garage. The black market for old toilets seems to have dried up here. (the water-misers have improved a bit).
