I know there are valid health concerns... I don't know that this occurance meets (nor know that it doesn't) meets an actual dangerous level. If it does, great.. I applaud their actions.

Portland's water system has these reservoirs as storage systems for its treated drinking water. I don't know if they are open to the environment or not. IMHO, they should be protected from outside intrusion. Are they?

the main thing that would concern me is restaurants not throwing out all the ice they have right now and then sterilizing all the ice machines and storage containers. Otherwise you're going to get contaminated water with your soft drink.

No. One cow poops in a stream above a reservoir, it doesn’t cause elevated levels well downstream three days running. Portland has open air reservoirs, and some contamination is inevitable. This is way beyond what’s normal or typical.

Well, it’s awesome that you’re so comfortable sharing an ill-informed opinion.

Fecal coliform causes illnesses like gastroenteritis. In this case, there’s a bigger problem, which is they don’t know where it’s coming from. The fecal coliform is both a contaminant and a marker. It’s easy to test for; when you see it and you don’t know the source, you have to worry about things like other bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Imagine a main leak causing low water pressure at a hospital where a faulty backflow preventer is allowing sewage to contaminate the water main.

They are undoubtedly testing the water for things like norovirus, but those tests take time, and contaminated water kills people. This isn’t like upset tummy stuff. We’re talking dead babies.

that was just little dig on Chipotle. That's all.

Just got back from a run to New Seasons grocery. They had to trash all their produce and about half of their deli.
