We get Omaha products when they're on sale and we can finagle free shipping. That brings the cost down to local prices. And Omaha quality is much better than beef sold here. Yeah, it's frozen, but that just makes it more tender when hot off the grill :-)

My Mom got about 20 lbs from an over-shipment lot at about a third of the regular price. It was still overpriced, but the first couple of steaks were better than average before they started to get freezer burn.

Y'all, over the years, have gotten a pretty good idea of what I'll eat... Makes some of you a bit queasy to think about, right? Haggis, beef heart... stuff that been in the freezer measured in geological ages... etc.

So, you have the FULL measure of my meaning when I say;

Omaha Steaks meat is nasty, nasty, NASTY!

And I swear their "filet mingnon's" are just pieces of top round cut into circular pieces...

They irradiate their meat, too, if that matters to you.

For me, choosing between my local butcher who's been around for 50+ years, or ordering overpriced meat from an office supply chain is an easy choice.

Likewise if you are buying your beef at Staples.

I love the taste neutrons add to the overall flavor.

of course it matters. Why do they irradiate the meat? do they try to make it "safer" (kill some bacteria) or to preserve it?

It kills all living things, small and large. So it both keeps it safer and preserves it longer. Works great. Another peaceful use of nukular energy.

That's the one thing I LIKE about their meat...
I've been a fan of irradiation to kill bacteria and thereby preserve meat and other foods for a long time...
But as usual the "radiation's bad, m'kay... it's like... um.. bad m'kay!" crowd has stifled it.

I agree. I'd like to see most foods irradiated. Zap flour, produce, any ground meat, etc. to start. Then go from there. Run all that water in Portland through irradiation on its way out of the treatment plant. Irradiated e-coli is yummy and, in micro-doses, harmless.
