I Just Learned Something about my Magic Mouse!

Ever since moving from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, I have been puzzled, frustrated, and annoyed when my friendly Magic Mouse would suddenly take an innocent tap and zoom the page I was looking at to two or three times its size. Then I would have to try shrinking it with the Zoom key on my MS keyboard, or just bailing out and relaunching the page.

Well, today I just discovered that I could replicate that effect deliberately, by double-tapping on my Magic Mouse. And, better yet, I could reverse it by double-tapping again!

Who knew? Did Apple tell us? At any rate, it is a wonderful revelation to suddenly have control over what had seemed a random, chaotic act of Nature—well, of Mankind and its Black Boxes.

There should be a whole bunch of settings for that mouse in the Mouse System Preference panel.

Have you been there and checked it out yet?

"Smart zoom."

It's in the mouse preferences.

And has a video-demo right there.

Hmmph. Well, I thought I had looked at that stuff in settings when I upgraded. But obviously it didn't sink in. I've mentioned the sudden zoom before here, and at least one other member said he was flummoxed by the same problem. So I'm not the only doofus here—small consolation, I know. confused smiley

Review all of the System Preferences whenever you upgrade the OS.

You'll get the surprises out of the way before they bite you.

Now aren't you glad you didn't smash it to smithereens in a fit of searing blind rage ?

I stopped using mine. Got tired of changing the batteries every couple weeks.

Yes, it did:

I use two pair of rechargeables. Just replace one pair when they run down, and put them on the charger. I really like the ability to scroll with one finger on the mouse. Now that I can zoom and shrink with a couple of taps, I like it even better.

OS X should have the option to pop-up daily (hourly?) tidbits of features/functions/training (with earned BADGES!), etc.

And, option to allow community/curated sourced ones, in addition to any built-in ones; with web updates. Or community annotated.

For me, it was sooner than every two weeks. But my big complaint was comfort. It's profile is too low for my clumsy hands and I cramp up. So I got a $9 USB Logitech mouse. Done.

I love the Magic Mouse. Just so smooth to use.

It took me a long time to get used to the sharp edges on the Magic Mouse. Finally, I learned to hold it differently than a rounded mouse, and now I really like it.

Apple often sacrifices function to form, but to my mind the Magic Mouse is virtually a perfect marriage of the two, a truly elegant piece of industrial design.
