why do they do that, why with their hands on their heads? that seems wrong, they are not prisoners.

One student killed, gunman is dead. Not many details.

I had to look up Troutdale. It is a Portland suburb, east of downtown near the Columbia River.

Standard procedure. How do they know the shooter didn't try to blend in with other students to try to escape? Or to get to place where they can pull out another weapon and start shooting more people?

They are potential suspects until they *know* who and where the threat is.

As mentioned, the suspect could try to hide among the innocent.

And there could be more than one assailant.

It's tragic enough that any one is killed. It would be even more so if someone else was killed because police overlooked another suspect.

the tragedy begins long before each innocent student and administrator is tragically gunned down.

and hopefully some day someone will want to work to make the beginning the end rather than use the result to further a political agenda

"preventing children from being killed" is an awful political agenda, isn't it?

still not sure how effective this is. the shooter could walk away without guns and try to blend with the students to try to escape. What difference makes if he has his hands on his head? or the shooter could have a knife or a gun hidden under the shirt and shoot/stab more students once they are "safe"

It is when it prevents me from buying as many guns as I want.

Or even if it doesn't and I still perceive it that way.

Me first. I need a gun. Don't care about you.

A terrible day indeed. I live about two miles from the school. Actually went to high school there back when it was Columbia High School (District used to have two high schools and they merged to the newer building) Graduated in the gymnasium almost 29 years ago to the day. What possesses somebody to commit this type of crime, regardless of weapon, I will never understand. Please pray for the family of the victim, his friends and fellow classmates.

you're not very bright, are you.

Maybe some day someone can explain to you what a political agenda is.
In the mean time stay away from young impressionable minds, we're having enough troubles with them committing suicide as it is.

When a kid can't control the toy you remove it. When adults can't control toys, society does, unless the toy is just so fun and makes me feel good.

Highest incidences of school shootings in the world, and we literally wouldn't change it because of higher priorities.

Interesting bill. I was standing on that very spot 3 days ago. We're you the guy trying to sell me postcards?

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Perspective: Between last Friday and Sunday, Chicago -- just Chicago -- had 34 shootings. They're so regular that they don't seem to count as "news."
