It fits right in with my prediction a few months ago - by almost the same title, over in the "other dimension."

scsi and firewire do not make enough profits. This is why the pc world is going to serial, so that if you want anything more than dual channel, you'll have to pay through the nose.

I guess I'll have to hang on to my copious amounts of old technology Macs so I can D/L songs to my original 5GB iPod.

Like I haven't been doing that already for 15 years or so…

What I want to know is....


WHY can't we get PHOTOS of prototypes out of Apple, but the Russians and Chinese can get intelSAT blueprints and user guides out of the Pentagon?

Far more convenient that installing from a set of optical media.

If it really won't be included in the next iBooks, that will make me a lot less interested in owning one.

There is no need for firewire 400 since 800 is backwards compatible and you can connect with a 400/800 cable.

It's hard to believe that all that new video equipment will not be able to connect to a Mac.

Silliest post I've seen yet. Like your 5 GB iPod has a long future ahead of it. It's well beyond its expected life span. Is it on its original battery? Hang on to it, it'll be a collector's item, the 8th Wonder of the World!

You know we now have 60GB iPods that cost as much as your 5GB iPod did new, right?

HEy- I still use a 5GB ipod, sure I've replaced the hard drive and battery with ones from discarded 5GB ipods, but the darn thing still works!

I don't forsee any it failing anytime soon, works great for my needs. I charge it everynight, and update my songs when I feel it necessary, 5GB is plenty of space, even with 256kbps mp3s. Who really needs 60GB of space for just music? I mean I've got over 45GB of music at home, but NO WAY would I need to take all of this with me, that's almost 2 weeks of non-stop music. no iPod battery will play out that long.

Yes--just suggesting, this is the exception, not the rule.

Most high-tech hand-held portable devices aren't considered a permanent fixture, usually they're semi-disposable, replaced as better, newer ones come out. Novelty tends to drive the market, as well as fast-moving technology with regards to capacity, battery life, etc.

There will always be die-hards that keep them running forever. But this isn't a factor in whether new standards are adopted or not adopted.

I think the "death of Firewire" Chicken-Little battle cry is getting undue attention. There's not enough credible evidence, in fact, there isn't a single Intel-based Apple computer on the market yet! In the meantime, everybody's an expert. It's fun to guess and speculate, but that's all it is.
