I think I did pretty well today. I bought a Dyson DC35 for $24 and it sells for $289 on Amazon. It is missing some accessories but I just want it for the couches so it is perfect. Then I got a Bushnell 565 for $15 and it sells for $85 on Amazon. I'm not usually a lucky person but today was my day!

Oh, I also bought a projector and took the lens out of it. It is huge. It is labeled 317mm. I bought it for $3.99 and I left the projector at goodwill. I was pretty happy with that one also.

Slide projector lens?

I don't know what the projector is called. It is the type when you use the transparent sheets of plastic with a pen and the light shines through the plastic through the lens to a mirror and then onto the wall. I got a lens out of one probably 20 years ago and it has been excellent for reading small print. Now I have an extra one. Cool for $3.99.

Overhead projector. I still have flashbacks about trying to print out halfway decent transparencies for our client service people's presentations. We were using a Hewlett-Packard inkjet, one of the first ones with Postscript, IIRC. The transparenices never looked good.

Fresnel lens. Take it into the sun to cook your lunch.

My wife bought a dozen or so weird stuffed rabbits from some Nickelodeon show for a buck a piece new with tags today and they're worth $30 each on eBay. Also four Brita filters (in the box) for the same price and they also go for $30 each. So, about $400 gross on about $15 investment. It was a good day.

I only drop stuff off at Goodwill. Do you guys treat this as a regular store/business?

I'm not ashamed to say about a third of my wardrobe came from Goodwill. However, it is difficult to find good guys clothes though since we typically wear them out rather than change with changing fashions. I had to play in an office golf outing an I was able to get a pretty nice set of matching clubs for less than $20.

I am a rare goodwill shopper. Yesterday I stopped in for my daughter who wanted to purchase some books. Finding a few treasures for myself was a bonus and I have no plans to sell any of it. The Vacuum will be great for the stairs and couches, the telescope is just plain fun, and the lens is great for reading the small print manufacturers love.

Goodwill can be a good place to shop. I bought bed sheets there last year very affordably and they always have them available. I've observed some furniture deals also. Older wood furniture that could be sanded and refinished easily (I've done this). The clothing doesn't work for me as I'm a large person and they typically do not have my size.

As for donations, I take all of my own clothing to the local Mission. They maintain a clothing room for people who arrive with nothing but the clothes on their backs. I've toured their facility twice in the past and plan to tour again next week with my youngest daughter. It is important to show her the good work being done there.

Goodwill debunking

There are many email rumors and untruths about the salaries of non-profit CEO's out there. Goodwill is a huge organization that provides job training, counseling and jobs for many people (disabled or not). I am proud to shop there and also donate my own stuff to them. Besides, there are great deals to be had!

Kahuna - good job pointing to link for the IRS 990. Any business that is non-profit must declare their top earners to the IRS. Then it is public information - go get it! Especially if you know someone on the board or very high up at a non-profit.

We have gotten good old-skool Pyrex at Goodwill for a buck or two. The actual borosilicate kind, not the current barely-better-than-plate-plass stuff.

I have seen the idea posted before that thrift shops are for poor people to shop in. While that may be the case for some thrift shops, most of them are there to raise money via the sale of merchandise and are happy when people with money to spend come in and do just that.

To me they seem very corporate-y for a charitABLE biz.
I still drop my stuff off.

For me, I buy stuff cheaply from ebay. Used clothing. Mainly easier to find small/extra small, or certain things.
