OT: what does this mean after a "Dr's" name?

I thought I was seeing a Dr at the emgency room but the paper I got showed:

Dr's name, PA-C

Clearly not an MD? is this a practical nurse type designation or what?

Physician Assistant. C means certified by the professional organization.

You didn't see a physician. You saw a Physician Assistant. However, the physician in charge of that PA must sign and approve of your chart, as documented by the PA.

I'll join the "Hours after a correct response was given, I'll post the same response" crowd!

Physician Assistant, with Certification.
And like everything else that involves checkups, tests, recommendations and medication in the hospital, it requires a doctors signature.

You people are soo wrong!

It really stands for "Plastic Automaton-cerebral." That wasn't a person who helped you, but obiously a high level android.

Ever since Art Bell went off the air I've noticed such a decline in people's understanding of what's really going on out there...

Physician signature is not necessarily required. In Washington State, a PA-C must be supervised by a physician, but notes and orders do not have to be co-signed (except in certain situations). If the PA is not certified, then all notes must be signed by the supervising physician or designated alternate.

Yup, and they can write prescriptions, too. I see a PA-C regularly to monitor my RA and the drugs. The supervising physician does review some tests and exrays, but I haven't actually seen him in three or four years.

My arthritis specialist is partnered with a PA-C here in Seattle. Within the narrow scope of arthritis, she is almost as knowledgeable as he is, and most of my visits are with her actually. She can prescribe and order tests. My doc reviews all the cases at the end of the day AFAIK, just for consult and to keep him appraised.
