That's actually kind of clever.
And now the cats know about it.

We are doomed.

OK, so the survivalists are stocked with tuna, and AK rounds. Good plan.

Oh, and my cat is now eying my chili and baked bean cans. He likes beans, and I guess he will now serve himself.

That can opening trick will also provide your daily requirement of steel and concrete trace minerals. You can spice it up by using a variety of local rocks and boulders too.

If I'm starving, and have no can opener, and a bunch of canned food, a bit of filings and dirt isn't going to bother me terribly.

And if done carefully then no iron or rock will get in to the food.

I thought that was going to be about the virtues of having an AK handy.

So they're grinding through the top of the lid?

Maybe that could be done on a less abrasive surface and just heat up the glue enough to squeeze the lid off.

Hm. Maybe it's not glue but some sealant.

Anyway, keep your P-38 handy.

Here in NYC, we used this 'hack' when we were kids in the 60's, and I'm sure we weren't the first.

Back then the cans had identical caps on both ends, and we would grind them off on the sidewalk so there were no sharp edges.

The hollow can tube was now the perfect device for directing the water from an open fire hydrant at whomever you wanted to soak. This was before the city mandated spray caps to save water. Killjoys.

This clip from 'Do The Right Thing' is the perfect illustration:

Staten Island here, 1958 to 1966.
We used Tennis Ball cans; they were freely available from the Walker Park clubhouse.

We lived on Davis Avenue, just a couple of houses up from the park. I went to find a silly photo, and found this most extraordinary recent image instead:

There were a lot of stories told about our neighborhood when we were there, and some of the stories revolved around the old, and very respectable, Black families who claimed to have lived there since the Civil War.
As to why they ended up there:

Back to Tennis Ball cans. Yes, you had to use a can opener on one end back then; they were real cans, pressurized because Tennis Balls back then had limited life once exposed to Air. There was a key to be used to tear the metal strip that secured the other end on, at least in theory.

Many a tennis ball started out the game with mysterious red spots.

Now a lot of interesting things could be done with such an empty tube, with one dangerously sharp lip.
One thing involved Horse Chestnuts. Find a soft bark tree, and jam/twist the sharp edge in.
Stand some distance away, and toss Horse Chestnuts at the open end. Rules may be made up on the spot, and conveniently forgotten the next day.

You could also poke a small hole near the sharp edge of the can, jam/twist it into the ground, (Angle if you like.), spray the inside with some stolen Aqua-Net, then drop a Tennis Ball in, while holding a lit Kitchen Match up to the hole.

(Scene from "Glory".)

With all of the things we used to do, it's a miracle any of us made it to adulthood.

Though, admittedly, some of us are still waiting to arrive.

I'm an arguably manlier man.
I prefer Slazenger, myself.
Plenty of heft, accurate at close range.

LOL, some have to compensate and need the leverage.

Or try opening a #10 can with a dinky P-38. I saw a civilian model with a spork as the handle.
