So ok or not ok to list something for sale here?
Posted by: pRICE cUBE

I guess I should know this being a long timer here but I have an item I want to sell and it would be a shame if the people here didn't get first crack at it. Are we using a site or can we mention here periodically?

you're supposed to post something like:

"I have an X I'd like to sell...where's the best place for me to sell it?"

Then watch the PM's roll in with offers to purchase it from you.

I doubt if the sponsors would want to referee something like this.

It says nothing about posting something you want out of the house for a small bit of compensation - I say go for it...

What say ye, Larry?

I think it would be nice to be able to offer one's used stuff to forum members here, however, I could see it become a nightmare if spammers all of a sudden flood this place. Who's going to manage it? What are the criteria for posting? Membership only? Membership for 3 months? a year? Must have x-amount of posts to not qualify as a spammer?

This forum attracts no new members so I think most of this is moot.

In order to buy a 2013 Mac Pro and reduce redundancy, where could a person sell a Nikon 400mm 2.8 II lens and ensure it has a better chance if ending up with a nice, kind, decent person that will treat it well? turbo naughty smiley Camera

That is a Mac related post, right?

This theoretical person who used it for about a dozen basketball games would list it for 5100 units of currency and is open to offers.

Theoretical person has a local seller unloading a 1 month old Mac Pro for $2500 because of buyers remorse in not buying a MacBook Pro instead.

Specifically verboten to compete with OWC. Much like biting the hand that feeds us.

I agree that the 'what's the best way to sell x' is a nice hidden method to begin a PM bidding war.

Fred Miranda buy and sell would be a better place to sell that item in this hypothetical scenario.

I don't feel it's unauthorized to want a fellow forumite to have access to a bargain by a fellow member. Crass, merchandising of your stuff? No. Helping somebody out, yes. If somebody wanted to sell GeneL a Mini because they know he needs one and it's a good deal for him, why should we stop that?

Is that in itself potentially a problem? Would our sponsors prefer a growing Forum to a static or declining one?

As for competition with OWC, I don't think members trading used (and often obsolete) computer hardware and other items would be viewed as 'competition'. Folks here post deals from outfits which definitely do compete with OWC, with no complaints that I am aware of.

This is a membership group, with volunteer moderators, so I'd assume the moderators could simply ban someone identified as a 'spammer'.

My suggestion: Try a Trading Post for a while and see how it works. If it becomes 'a nightmare', close it down. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained."

I think this is a good idea. I would welcome this.

Perhaps also, set a threshold on post count before you can post to that forum.

This AND this (minimum post count before being able to post, or maybe moderated -- i.e., you can only post main threads if you're approved).

And this.

It may in fact be unauthorized, but I'd like to think it could/would be overlooked if done with a modicum of tact and subtlety.

If I had something to sell, I'd probably feel better about offering it here than deal with a totally unknown individual. If Free Stuff Monday is any indication, most sales would probably be one-offs rather than somebody being an actual vendor soliciting business from the forumites, and literally competing with Larry.

At this point, FSMs aren even equivalent to a yard sale, but I wouldn't want to see a flea market here.

Once I pm'd a forum member in response to his post re thinking about a MF camera with an offer to sell mine. He agreed, and was ready to paypal, but when I started to box it up, I found that it didn't turn on at all anymore (1st time that happened to any of my gear- it was an old Pentax 645).
So NEVER AGAIN -no forum selling! (kidding).

Not true any more. There are a few at OWC that moderate now. No forum member volunteers since early 2013?

No way to know. My best guess is that the sponsor doesn't see this forum as adding any value, and sees the resources devoted to it as a drain.

Well, I hope you're wrong. After all, good will is important to a business, and I would guess the good vibes most of us have toward OWC extend beyond our smallish numbers. I have steered people to them on several occasions.

I would assume the resources are small, since OCW maintains a substantial web presence, and this forum probably takes a tiny percentage of that. Dedicating staff time could be seen as a loss, however, unless outweighed by other factors.
