I had a bunch of scrap lumber hanging around the garage after doing some work on the house, including a whole slew of 70-year old straight grain doug fir 2x4s and an old butcher block countertop. So, I added a few screws, a whole lot of sawing and sanding, and voila!

Very nice ! There is a problem with nice looking workbenches. You end up not wanting to work on it because it's too pretty.

I just now came in from the shop and found this post. I spent two day getting a maple workbench top mounted on an old kitchen cabinet, and aligning it all with my table saw, then put a wood vise on it. Been meaning to get this done since I bought the bench and vise on sale over a year ago at Woodcraft.

Next step will be a base like yours, with drawers underneath.

Although it looks like a workbench, and could make a good one, it's actually a kitchen island (i.e. a workbench for cooking) for my tenant's kitchenette, which was a bit short on counterspace. I should also correct my initial comment: I didn't actually do any sanding at all, but instead used my new cabinet scraper to get everything as smooth as a baby's bottom.

That was one of the things I used to hope to find cheap at a garage sale, a really fine old workbench.
Since that time, I accumulated so much other stuff that now I'd have no place to put it!

Nah. I save the nice joinery for pieces that go in my house. This one was a quickie...I put it together with pocket screws so it's easy to break down and move.
