Doctor Who Fans: Check Out The TARDIS Music Box I Built
Posted by: The Grim Ninja

I had a customer on my Etsy shop ask me if I could do a TARDIS shaped music box. It took almost two months for me to complete, but here's what I made. It's roughly 15 inches tall and 8 inches square. It plays the Doctor Who theme song, and the lantern/windows light up.

Building Process: All the walls flat.

The walls consist of two layers of thin plywood with 1/4" x 1/8" strips of wood on top for the details. I tried to get the strips from JoAnn, but they ran low so I had to make most myself. A pain on a table saw. The wall posts are 3/4" square.

Standing up for a test fit.

Had to see if everything would stay relatively square when glued. The windows are made of 1/4" thick plexiglass.

Clamps! So many clamps!

Probably needs more clamps.

Testing the roof.

The roof even has a slope to it as the "real" TARDIS does.

Added a base.

Needed somewhere to stash the battery pack for easy access.

Working on the drawers.

What better way to make seem bigger on the inside than to add drawers?

Drawer pulls.

Each knob was made by hand on my lathe.

Police Signs.

These took forever to get right. Ended up printing each sign off, then attaching to some plywood with Mod Podge. After they dried, I framed the signs with 1/8" strips of wood. Sadly, when I added the blue color, it seeped into the signs and I had to redo all of them.

All the electronics.

It's a music box after all, so there's several bits of electronics inside. Most importantly is an audio playback circuit, there's also a microchip to "pulse" the lighting for the windows and lantern. If desired, the windows can be made to flicker along with the music instead.

Mostly together in the workshop.

See any wires? Not unless you look really closely.

"Jumpstart"

OK, the battery pack wasn't done and this was the easiest way to test things out.

Almost Finished.

Decided to do a small photoshoot with it before completion.

I think the lights turned out pretty nicely.

And it's finally finished.

The power for the lights in the doors runs through the hinges.

Dematerializing.

Sadly, it's not fully functional. It only travels forward in time and only through space with a bit of assistance.

So freaking cool!!! smiley-shocked003

If I may ask, how much did you charge for it?
It looks like it had to take hours and hours of work.

Again, so very cool and you did a very, very, nice job. I am so impressed.

I'm not a Dr. Who fan, either (just never watched it...maybe I'd like it if I did), but you did a helluva job!

Thanks for all the positive comments. In the end, I charged the buyer $300+shipping. I think I undercharged a little, considering the many, many hours I spent on it, but I felt bad for going over budget as it was. I did a lot of the features without being asked for the experience. Drawers and knobs, the signs, the windows and lantern.. none of that was requested, but I thought it'd make it so much cooler when finished.

So if you were to market them (INSANE, when you KNOW that BBC lawyers will find you), you'd have to charge around $400?

That's steep, but there would be a market for it... for THAT kind of quality. I'm sure there are plenty of real licensed tardis' that are plastic junk...

Well.. part of the difficulty of making this one was learning how to do so many new things. There were so many intricate parts to build that much of the build time was figuring out how to make them or where to buy them. Now that I have the experience, I can probably make future versions in less than half the time.

And yes, there are other TARDIS boxes out there. Here's one at Thinkgeek. It looks awful, made of cardboard? Garbage.

I touched the real TARDIS and I did not even know what it was. I then began watching the reboot DR WHO and I certainly no know. The real thing is dense; rock hard.

Really nice job. Very difficult to do windows and get the lites the same sizes. Base is a bit heavy for the height. If you are interested I have more thoughts about the choice of woods and stains. Just PM me and we can talk without Robert M. Just kidding.

VERY very nice!
I have a LITTLE idea how much work went into that (though woodworking is not really in my skill set to any large degree...), and I AM a big Dr. Who fan.
You DID undercharge if it was half as much work as I suspect.

Really really nice work, man!

There are certainly a lot of things I would do differently. Much of the missmatching is due to stores running out of what I needed and having to substitute as best I could. If I build another, it'll be a lot more 'uniform'.

Very nicely done.

Delia Derbyshire
[www.delia-derbyshire.org]

In 1959, on approaching Decca records, Delia was told that the company DID NOT employ women in their recording studios, so she went to work for the UN in Geneva before returning to London to work for music publishers Boosey & Hawkes.

In 1960 Delia joined the BBC as a trainee studio manager. She excelled in this field, but when it became apparent that the fledgling Radiophonic Workshop was under the same operational umbrella, she asked for an attachment there - an unheard of request, but one which was, nonetheless, granted. Delia remained 'temporarily attached' for years, regularly deputising for the Head, and influencing many of her trainee colleagues.

To begin with Delia thought she had found her own private paradise where she could combine her interests in the theory and perception of sound; modes and tunings, and the communication of moods using purely electronic sources. Within a matter of months she had created her recording of Ron Grainer's Doctor Who theme, one of the most famous and instantly recognisable TV themes ever. On first hearing it Grainer was tickled pink: "Did I really write this?" he asked. "Most of it," replied Derbyshire.
