the case for Canon

"Since you downloaded and installed the Mac drivers from our web site and the option to edit the address book is available from other programs the drivers are installed correctly.
However, it appears that Preview will not allow you to make changes in the address book. A work around would be to edit the address book in another word processing program like Textedit or Word. Or, you could contact Apple for assistance with the Preview program.

Please feel free to contact us again if you have any other questions or concerns.

Thank you for choosing Canon."

That's a very nice f-you message. So nice I don't even understand what they said.

this is my response.

"thank you for not reading the responses to your questions.

Canon said - “However, it appears that Preview will not allow you to make changes in the address book. A work around would be to edit the address book in another word processing program like Textedit or Word. Or, you could contact Apple for assistance with the Preview program.”

and I responded - "yes, but the Address Book option is grayed out.”

that means that I can’t access the Address Book, whether it’s edited in Contacts (the only way to edit it) or some other app (will not access the address book.) that Canon is totally mistaken about. Being unfamiliar with OSX is not an excuse.
FYI: Apple profit $7.7B, Canon profit, less than $1B.

Since I can access the Address Book from other Apple apps, the issue is with Canons drivers/software.
If Canon has no answer or the is answer is Canon can’t figure it out, or Canon doesn’t care, it would be better to admit that then pass the blame.
Additionally, the way the drivers/software are configured, it will only take fax numbers as a string of numbers without dashes or spaces, which is exactly not the way that most Address Books and people format phone numbers."

OK, I admit I'm annoyed. as the kids say "what evs".

Would love to see Canon's response, if any.

Sounds like Canon didn't bother to use Apple's API for accessing Contacts/Address Book.

I'm so confused. What do Canon's drivers (or Canon) have to do with Address Book or Preview?

I was just about to pose the same question.

Is this something to do with a printer and a mailing list? Mail merge?

Seriously, I have no idea what's going on.

I originally clicked because I thought this was about getting a case for a Canon camera.

I've had a really hard time finding a smallish case just for the SX40, like the old days when the factory made a case that screwed into the tripod socket and had a cover that flipped underneath and… Well, you get the idea.

Anyway...

Even with the help of Preview? What about Word?

I should have explained better as it seems only deckeda got me.

This relates to faxing from the Mac via Canons driver to the Canon MF4350d that I have.

I can't access the OSX Address Book as it's grayed out, from within Preview.
So I can't add or choose in Preview.
I can only use one "address" or phone number for each fax, each time; with no ability to save.
Kind of a pain with my entire address book/Contacts.

It works fine from Safari (so I don't think it's an Apple issue) or Word, but nor from Preview which is where I generate 99.9% of faxs as pdfs.
