Apparently a suicide. He was 63.
He was very talented.

News report I saw said it was from self induced asphyxiation.

What a shame. He was a talented guy. I hope he is at peace, as he must have had some real demons.

I actually enjoyed his serious roles better than his comedy.

He was really into doing his last TV Show, which I really enjoyed and I could tell he enjoyed. It was unexpectedly cancelled. He even had a kind of a reunion with Pam Dawber on it. Just an icon. He put everything he had from every cell in his body into his expression.

There was no mention as to cause on the report I heard.

Regards of any circumstances, it's very sad.

RIP.

I thought the Crazy Ones was hilarious and the people making the decision to cancel it are nuts.

Wow..total sucker punch.

Not many get to truly leave a mark where there was no mark..he was Robin Williams. In his best..quicker than almost anyone and prolific in a matter of seconds, every second. Pretty amazing guy.

RIP.

From TVLine

The actor, who most recently appeared in CBS’ one-season comedy The Crazy Ones and had checked into rehab on July 1, was found unresponsive in his home on Monday. A report from the Marin County coroner’s office listed the suspected cause of death as suicide via asphyxiation — although “a comprehensive investigation,” including a toxicology report, “must be completed before a final determination is made.”

I haven't been a fan of Robin Williams since i was a youngster; as I grew older, his comic persona and 'always on' demeanor wore thin and felt a bit too much like someone uncomfortable in their "real" skin.

There are no words to adequately describe how much I hate the scourge of depression and the effects it can have on people.

RIP.

Another great one gone way too soon. R.I.P. Robin. You will be missed.

I loved his video "Live and Uncensored" doing standup. What a magnificent gift he had to be able to make people laugh uncontrollably.

Although not terribly surprising I thought he had the strength to avoid the final solution.

That's very sad. Apparently, even with all of his accomplishments and acclaim, he was very unhappy. Taking one's life can seem a perfectly reasonable solution for someone suffering from the unremitting pain of severe depression.

Very sad...
Friends of mine interacted with him in the early 90's, and said he was a great guy, but with his drug and alcohol problems, they were shocked he wasn't already dead (and this was in '98 when they said this).

I truly loved him in Dead Poet's Society, Good Will Hunting and especially, The Fisher King
There was a scene that explained what love was to young me:

Parry.

Brilliant comics shining out of shells that hold the dearest and wickedest of sadness. Growing flowers on toxic soil.

A thousand cuts.

Did you ever hear the story of the Fisher King?

"Begins with the king as a boy having to sleep alone in the forest to prove his courage so he can become king. while he's spending the night alone he's visited by a sacred vision. out of the fire appears the holy grail, symbol of god's divine grace. a voice said to him, 'you shall be the keeper of the grail so that it may heal the hearts of men.' but the boy was blinded by greater visions of a life filled with power and glory and beauty. and in this state of radical amazement, he felt for a brief moment, not like a boy. but invincible. like god. so he reached in the fire to take the grail and the grail vanished leaving him with his hand in the fire to be terribly wounded. now, as this boy grew older his wound grew deeper. until one day life for him lost its reason. he had no faith in any men, not even himself. he couldn't love or feel loved. he was sick with experience. he began to die. one day, a fool wandered into the castle and found the king alone. and being a fool, he was simple-minded. he didn't see a king. he only saw a man alone and in pain. and he asked the king, 'what ails you, friend?' and the king replied: ' i'm thirsty and i need some water to cool my throat.' so the fool took a cup from beside his bed, filled it with water and handed it to the king. and as the king began to drink he realized his wound was healed. he looked and there was the holy grail that which he sought all of his life. he turned to the fool and said: 'how could you find that which my brightest and bravest could not?' the fool replied: 'i don't know. i only know that you were thirsty.'"

Laugh, lest we cry.

Must have seen Dead Poet's Society a dozen time in the theatre when it came out.... He touched my heart in an incredible way at a wonderful time. Ran in to him (literally) in SF a few years ago - would have been starstruck but he was so quiet and unassuming that i couldn't be. RIP.
