Anyone here use Mail with Exchange (or should I just use Outlook)?

I'm trying something different. For the past couple years I've used Outlook Mac 2011 with an Exchange server, but at the new job I'm giving Mac Mail and Calendar a try. That said, I'm noticing some quirks about it.

The biggest issue is how long it takes to get email. I had it on the Automatic setting, but it would still often take 10 minutes to get a message. In comparison, my phone would get it much more quickly. So I changed it to check every minute, yet it still often takes 10.

Calendar scheduling is a little odd as well. Sometimes I get invites from others and there's no date or time listed for the meeting. If I bring it up in Calendar, it's there, but it doesn't show in Mail. Plus it's just downright quirky in Calendar trying to schedule a meeting with someone by looking at their available time slots. There's the Calendar window, then a popover to edit an event, a Check Availability... button which triggers another, very small window which goes in and out of focus while you're using it... how did Microsoft manage to get this better than Apple?

Of course, Outlook hasn't been updated in three years and still has that horrible ribbon.

Anyone have some tips on how to successfully use Mail & Calendar with Exchange?

Calendar doesn't work with public calendars, that was a deal breaker for me. I stick with the devil I know.

Outlook uses protocol unavailable to third parties, Apple is stuck using Activesync.

But yeah, Apple really doesn't seem to care to update Mail.

Outlook and Mail are very slow reading mail from our exchange server.

This iPhone reads my exchange mail about 100x fold faster.

I use apple Mail - works ok. But when I need to just check email rapidly, I use an iOS device.

The protocol isn't the issue. In that instance, I'm not referring to the email lag (where the protocol might be the issue, though iOS doesn't have an issue...), but to the UI. MS got it all on one easy to use screen. Popovers should be the last element on the top of the UI stack - not trigger another window.
