Managed to avoid social media (except LinkedIn) so far. Not interested in Facebook. Maybe I should try twitter? I am not quite sure what it does to be honest.

Yes, just do it. You don't have to participate if you don't want to, but it's a great way to find info you are interested in. Especially breaking news.

I follow the account of hockey news writers and misc other stuff. I haven't sent a single tweet yet - no reason to...

Sure. I created one, but I just listen to the little birdies. I don't make a peep. I only make a fool of myself around here in this less open sanitarium.

Occasionally, you can get some free benefit if you "Tweet" about it. I've also used it to blast Beach Camera in NJ after they phukked their eBay customers.

If you only want to join it for breaking news get on reddit instead and find the subreddits for the things you're interested in.

I don't think of Twitter as social media. The way I use, it's more like a headline news source, with option to dig deeper should I care to. It all depends on what/who you choose to follow.

Same menu as me, basically. Only one local news channel was worth keeping, the others spent too much time tweeting drek. But it's easy enough to rid yourself of irritating tweeters.
