Little League CEO: We'll consider compensating players in future

Sounds insane doesn't it...

But consider that the little league championships are televised and generate millions$.

"Little League has grown into a business with more than $80 million in assets and nearly $25 million in revenue, and every August it runs out a fresh batch of kids in hopes of captivating the country. Mo'ne Davis, the 13-year-old from South Philadelphia, did just that, and the last game she pitched drew a higher rating for ESPN than any MLB game since April 2007, according to Sports Media Watch.

For this, Davis received transportation to Williamsport, Pa., lodging, meals and a uniform. Her Taney Little League team gets to keep its equipment. And that's it. As Mo'ne Davis juices ratings and gives Little League a recognizable name and memory against which to sell corporate sponsorships next year and those thereafter, she sees not a penny of it. Instead, she gets something else to cherish.

"The experience we're providing them," Keener said.

Better than starting your own religion.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

$430k That is more outrageous than a corporate CEO making $5 mill! Considering all the local leagues are volunteer based, I am pretty shocked that the head dude is making that much!

The problem is that if the kids do get compensated, they will be shut out further competition. They will now be considered professional athletes and won't be able to play club, high school or college ball.

Yes, that's the conventional view but it's nonsense IMHO. The money could go to the parents in a trust that can only be used when they go to college or end their official amateur status.

This is the excuse to pay college football players nothing, despite the clear financial gain they provide their school.

Should probably go down to high school football in many states. The football players are risking concussions and permanent brain damage.

I worked with a guy in the Air Force who was drafted by a pro basketball team. He was cut from the team before he received any compensation, but this was enough to prevent him from playing on the Olympic basketball team. This was in the early 1980's. So, he enlisted in the Air Force, and played basketball for the top military teams...
