Questions about capacitor for heat pump AC
Posted by: Dennis S

It's a Lennox heat pump about 14 years old. I replaced the capacitor once and maybe twice. Twice now in the last few weeks, it has taken 4-5 trys for the outside unit to kick on. Does this indicate a weak or going-bad capacitor?

I thought about getting one from ebay to have on standby instead of driving over an hour and paying $30 for one made in China.

The numbers on mine are:

36-405R3744
40*5MFD +/-5%
Double 370/440V
40/5 HR & ER
MODEL LE5800XSW3
240 60 HZ 23 AMPS

What are the pertinant numbers to search for? I'll also measure mine later to help assure it's the right one.

does it look like this?

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

Wish I'd known about capacitors before my last AC failure. Took the tech 10 minutes to swap it; most of that time was spent on the panel screws...and writing out the bill. shiner smiley

not sure, but I got some great help from the folks here a few years back about a couple of capacitors on my AC:

Looks like you posted in that thread as well about getting a capacitor to have on hand....guess you didn't follow through then? :-)
