Difference between "Drone" and R/C Quadcopter?

It seems the term drone is becoming the accepted term. It seems that drone implies clandestine and illicit activities, where R/C quadcopter is more of a kids toy.

Is there a difference?

Is my son being a terrorist and endangering FAA operations when he flys his AR Parrot?

Below 83ft on your property is legal recreational use. Between 83ft and 500ft is a gray area that is still being litigated. Above 500ft is public airspace regulated by the FAA.

"Drone" sounds like something scary that government needs to "do something about".

There are several features that are debatable as to whether it is a drone or a quadcopter:

- Live video feed during flight
- Autonomous, GPS programmed flight

We've had some pretty amazing flights with our DJI Phantom 2+ the past few weeks. Amazing this level of flight control is available off the shelf.

I believe that the idea is that from 0-83ft it is a recreational RC quadracopter, from 83ft-500ft it is still under debate, >500ft it is a drone as it would be a semi-autonomous device self-navigating between its origin and destination.

A drone is an unmanned vehicle. An rc quad copter is the smaller and most innocent version of a drone.

Even a small model rocket can get to altitudes far higher than 500 feet.

The terms seem like they're use interchangeably these days. To me, drone implies some level of autonomous flight, which many consumer "drones" don't do. If you can program its flight with GPS waypoints then yes, I agree that can be classified a "drone."

The media latches on to a term and they overuse it. It happens all the time.

True, but that doesn't change the law for drones/RC planes/copters.

Amateur rocketry is exempt so long as operators comply with the pertinent regulations:
