So given the supposed iCloud hack or perhaps guessing of celebrity passwords, does anyone use the two-step authentication?
[support.apple.com]

I don't use iCloud, but the idea of setting up a 2 step process every time I want to buy an app on the App store seems like a pain, especially since several members of the family are all linked to the same AppleID so we don't have to buy multiple copies of the same app.

So does anyone actually use the two-step authentification? Is there any downside to not set this up if I don't use iCloud?

I use 2 Factor Auth everywhere possible - Several Google accts, Apple iCloud, Facebook, Twitter & Yahoo. I'm about to enable it for some Financial accounts as well - Fidelity & Vanguard.

The additional inconvenience outweighs the risk of getting hacked.

I do not have SMS enabled on my cellphones, therefore, Apple's two factor will not work for me.

The issue for me is how to manage when I'm overseas. I swap SIMs and thus don't have the same number. I presume this means I would have to remove 2Factor each time and reverse the process on return. Am I correct in understanding how 2Factor works, yes?

Most 2FA uses either SMS or Smartphone app to generate codes/authenticate your device.

This site explains 2FA for many services:

I don't use it anywhere because I don't have a cell phone.

Apple's 2FA is a very weak form of 2FA. It only helps protect against unauthorized purchases. It doesn't protect against data theft and so, neither could it have protected the celebs nudies.

[arstechnica.com]

- log onto your account at iCloud.com : you won't be prompted for authorization from a 2nd device

- unknown iPhones can be restored from iCloud with your backup if the enemy has your login credentials and you won't be prompted for authorization (or even notified) here either.
