OS 9 users: How secure is it?

I am fixing up an old G3 running OS 9 to give to my mother-in-law for light bookeeping and web surfing.

I know OS X is considered so secure to virus and hacking threats that many users don't even have security sw installed, but I am curious about OS 9. Is it vunerable? Do OS 9 users recommend installling security sw, and if so, what?

1) Web surfing is going to become problematic on OS9 as browsers become fewer and unsupported.

2) While it is true that OS9 is that most secure mainstream OS ever, OSX is just as solid. Nobody is going to write a virus for a computer that comprises 5% of all machines. It makes no sense at all, as the thing simply can not spread via macs.

3) Pump the RAM up as much as you can, and go to the trouble of putting OSX on that box, so she can use it for a good while.

you have nothing to worry about virus wise -- and just keep filesharing off and you should be set

mozilla might be the best browser for her -- even has tabs -- and runs pretty fast

Web browser choices for the classic Mac OS:

Some tips for browsing the web under the classic Mac OS.

Overall, I think the classic Mac OS has another two years of support for current web standards. Nothing is perfect, but then again, Internet Explorer is still the dominant browser (on Windows at least) and it is hardly a paragon of compatibility. Good luck.

Thanks to all - I appreciate the good tips and links.

My MIL is very tech-phobic, and the thought of learning a new OS is very intimidating to her. That's why I would like to install OS 9 on her machine.

Yes, she has been using OS 9 since it was OS 1 (or whatever).
