Something nasty on my Mac

Had a website with a pop up re: an unresponsive script, clicked ignore/discard and it locked up Firefox. Restarted it and it locked up again. Force quit it again and now I get tons of pop ups and advertisements on every page I open.

Point me in the right direction please
Rain

Seems to be system wide - does it in Safari too.

Odds are that the "unresponsive script" was from something evil that you've previously installed. Macs are mostly immune to malware spread by pop-ups.

Hard to say exactly what it is from the description. If you're getting lots of popups then it's probably not Geneio, which is the most common Mac malware out there right now.

What extensions do you see in Safari's pref's?

What extensions and plugins show up when you look at your add-ons (Tools > Add-Ons) in Firefox?

It's funny how most of the sites with instructions on how to remove "SaveonMac" are Windows specific.
This one isn't:

I just helped a friend last weekend with this. It was a script that installed extensions on firefox and safari. I can't remember what it was called. You should be able to check the extensions in the finder for each browser.

I'm having a similar problem but only on Firefox. I'm working my way through add-ons to find the cause.

Reset Safari. Will lose history, bookmks, etc. recoverable. Posting from hospital bed-no worries, but awkward to type.

1.2 million files scanned

68 infections
Should I track down each of these files and delete them?
The App won't let me do it as a batch.

"Something Nasty" as a common phrase has a very specific origin: Stella Gibbons' "Cold Comfort Farm". It is usually expanded to "I Saw Something Nasty In the Woodshed", with the word "Nasty" drawn out as far as possible, and spoken in the lowest possible register.
[en.wikipedia.org]

Although the book is generally regarded as a very well done parody of a certain kind of English rural literature, it is also a Science Fiction parody, set some two decades in the future, after the "Great Anglo-Nicaraguan War".

I highly recommend the book and the BBC TV and movie adaptations.

Take great care when uninstalling Genieo. They've deliberately placed what amounts to a "bomb" in the product that will prevent your Mac from successfully booting if the product is not removed in exactly the right way.

These are the instructions for removal:
