Messages question
Posted by: davemchine

My brother has Messages configured on his phone to only work with his phone number and not his email address. So I can't message him from my iPad UNLESS I start the conversation from my phone and then switch to the iPad once he responds. How does this work?

Ukulele music I couldn't find anywhere else.
I’ve added some recipes and spiritual thoughts as well.

I think "Messages" is an iOS only app, so it must be an iPhone.

What is it that you're trying to understand, davemchine? How does *what* work?

I think if he adds his email address to Messages, you'd be able to message him straight from the iPad.

He does use an iPhone. He refuses to add his email saying it is "too confusing."

So I can't message him from my iPad unless my first message to him is from my phone. So is Messages switching from SMS to apples Messages? It would sure be nice if it worked from my iPad on the first message and not have to wait for the second.

I believes this is what is happening, perhaps an expert in iMessages/SMS can explain it better. I find this also confusing sometimes. Especially when people have multiple email addresses associated with that account.

Tell him you won't talk to him anymore until he adds his email. wink smiley

Going into Settings, a few taps, and some typing isn't that difficult.

The user can choose which addresses or phone number to receive messages, and which ID to start conversations from.

I believe if both of your iDevices have iOS 8, are on the same wifi network, and have bluetooth turned on, you should be able to send IMs to him from your iPad. You iPhone must be in bluetooth range of the iPad for this to work, even though they may not be paired. Your IM should be transmitted to your iPhone and then sent to him.

With Yosemite public beta, phone calls can be made that way, so I'm told. Maybe it is only with a Mac on Yosemite public beta.

SMS via Messages on an iPad or Yosemite Public beta does not yet work, I think. Not sure.

I think I will just put an OUT OF ORDER
sticker on my head and call it a day.
