Apparently, the TMobile unlocked iPhone will work on Verizon, sort of...

well. i tried to go to my account and i tried to tell verizon to change my phone from a iPhone 5 to the iPhone 6 plus i bought today. they wouldn't accept the imei, because it is not a verizon phone.

but guess what. if i take my pre-activated sim card out of my iPhone 5 and put it in my iPhone 6 plus, it works. it turns on the CDMA radio. and i can make calls. and i can send texts and i can browse web pages

it seems the iPhone 6 plus is just like the iPad air and iPad mini retina. and its universal.

The only gotcha seems to be, that you have to have an already Verizon activated LTE SIM card. Verizon will not recognize the device in its system, as far as showing it is active on your account, but apparently the phone works for talk, text, & data, out of the box. Just a heads up for you guys.

Sounds like Vz just doesn't want you as a customer if you BYOD.

But it should be noted that it will mess up your ability to manage your account online. I did this with an AT&T iPad Air and while the iPad worked with a Verizon SIM, I couldn't change my plan online (i.e. to increase my data plan) until I called in and got them to manually input the IMEI into the system (at which point I got screwed into paying hundreds of dollars of overage fees because my plan change couldn't be backdated).

That's a fair statement. This sounds to me like an unexpected loophole that is going to be closed very soon.

VZW is really picky about their network.

They've dragged their feet certifying phones from manufacturers.

What's described may work, but carries risk.

Apple doesn't charge any more for a Verizon iPhone than it does a T-Mo phone, so what's the point in not just getting an offcially-sanctioned model to begin with, if one has that option and is looking for flexibility?

Be advised, I am not advocating this, just pointing out that it is possible.

I think Verizon can't close the loophole, because it is a technically possibility that they can't prevent. They can, and do, refuse to acknowledge the phone in their system, and will not let you access the rogue phone from your online account maintenance, so you have to have an already active SIM and forgo the online account maintenace, but this is about all they can do, as far as I can tell.

Aren't all the Verizon iPhones sold unlocked anyway? I thought that was a new thing that started with the 5 or 5s. Verizon bought some spectrum or something and part of the deal was that their phones are unlocked from the getgo.

That applies to GSM carrier compatibility.

This pertains to Verizon's own service.

Yes, it has been possible to use Verizon phones on ATT/TMobile, but not the other way around. Apparently, now it will work, sort of, either way.

I think this is useful for someone who buy a T-Mobile phone and decides to switch to Verizon after a while, but if you pay full price you might as well buy a Verizon from the beginning.

Verizon has a history of doing these things.

I'm likely to not buy a Verizon model on principle. They hate open access.

Yep. That's one of the incidents this thread immediately brought to mind.

Or Verizon could, you know, obey the rules they agreed to in order to acquire spectrum. This is more than an Apple problem, unfortunately.

But the T Mobile will work with an AT&T account, correct?

As long as it's unlocked, yes.

I see all these carriers as choosing the lesser of evils. They all have their issues.

Although their technical history has a lot to do with it, Sprint is even more closed than Verizon. And what's worse is that they can't compensate with a better, or faster network. It would have been interesting to see how a combined Sprint/T-Mo would have acted, but thankfully, that's no longer a question.

It used to be that this was the case, but Verizon had a different frequency for their LTE band. So, you could take a TMobile phone and use it on Verizon, but it would lack the appropriate antenna to use Verizon LTE - it would be 3G only.

Is this not the case anymore?

Apple seems to be attempting to cram as many supported frequencies as possible and I suppose better integrated chips with all the different radio technologies. Makes sense. One of my favorite features of later Symbian phones was pentaband support for 3/3.5G. LTE has been even more fractured in early days.
