As in brass instrument bell.... you'd think I'd have seen this process before. Very cool to watch.

Gas or electric?

Your boos mean nothing to me, I've seen what you cheer for.

Beautiful hand-work.

But I can't believe that it's not easier these days to cast them, and get a perfect exponential horn shape.

I found it most amusing in its original context.

Good observation. It is possible, and the shape is not the issue-- there is just no substiture for a hand-hammered bell. The other option preferred by professionals is "spun." Not exactly sure what the difference is.

Anybody know why they can't be stamped from a single piece of metal, like the housing on the new Mac Pro? It almost looks like a bell...

What they are talking about when that say a "spun" bell is the process of metal spinning - [en.wikipedia.org]. No hammering is involved, also no seam, the metal is formed by pressure on the metal as it is spun and formed over a mandril.
