A holiday that should be kept but renamed, maybe Redskin Day?

I don't imagine indigenous peoples in this hemisphere celebrate Columbus.

But a good reminder to me that there is no snail mail today.

I get to listen to elementary school teachers lecturing students on how Columbus was nothing but a murdering white devil who did absolutely nothing good for anyone, ever, and should be demonized, not celebrated.
(and yes, we have one who goes out of her way every year to make sure her students know how EVIL Columbus was, and how history would have been SO MUCH BETTER if he'd been strangled in the crib...).

Most Pertinent evidence points to his having been Catalan, so Latino.
Maybe they are right. :-)
Thank goodness he never set foot on the mainland USA and never had anything to do with the indigenous people on this mainland.

I read the subject line and just assumed it was about Christmas.

Sunday was a cold, rainy day and it just got me in the mood for winter and Christmas.

So, you can strike that single (so far) vote for "Not working."

I suggest a collection to purchase this teacher a one-way ticket back to Europe as a way that she can personally make amends to the indigenous peoples of the western hemisphere.

Saying Columbus discovered the New World in 1492 is like saying I discovered beer in 1980.

Happy Birthday, Mrs. M!

Happy birthday!

As for what I'm doing today: I'm somewhere in between lines. I normally teach at a tech institution here in NYC and we're off today. I'm getting done a bunch of personal stuff that I haven't had the chance to do yet and have been putting off for a while that I need to get out of the way. Like switching all my bills to digital statements versus paper; I have about half and half right now. Calling my landlord, etc. All that type of junk.

As for the holiday, I think a Native American Day would be a good idea.

Retired from my day job, so most days are already holidays to me. wiggle smiley

I might do some work over at my small biz. It's kind of drizzly, so I may not get much done. Perhaps straighten up the big barn and get snow removal equipment ready for Winter's onslaught.

I have never, ever worked at a place which gave Columbus Day as a holiday. I think it's just Federal and some states, I don't think private businesses bother with it do they?

EDIT: Although I did spend one Columbus Day on Cape Cod while visiting my folks and absolutely everything was closed including the mall. That was a couple of decades ago, so I've no idea if it is still such a big holiday.

My wife works in the Yakama Indian Reservation in a school. They don't celebrate Columbus Day.

I'm very much in favor of a balanced view of history... but folks like this lady take it WAY WAY WAY overboard the other direction.
