I really hate when you ask for an Illustrator EPS...

...and you get a craptastic bitmapped image that has simply been saved as an EPS. Or pasted into Illustrator and saved as an EPS.

Ask a smarter question. Tell them to provide a file in vector format. It puts the onus on them to provide the right thing, because if they don't know what a vector file is, then you'll know by their response to the question.

"Can you send me a vector file?"

"Sure, I have it in SVG, is that ok?"
"Sure, but I only have Illustrator 10, can I send you an Illustrator 10 .ai?"
"I only have it in PDF but it's outlined vector, will that work for you?"

vs

"When you say vector file, what program do you mean?"

This is what our rep asked...

"Can you please send us a logo in vector format like EPS."

Which I guess would be volunteering too much info as well.

Yeah once the "masses" hear EPS all they are able to focus on is the three letters at the end of the file name. It doesn't matter at this point if it's a vector EPS or a raster EPS, or even something else.

I've had EPS files sent to me that were jpegs that simply had .EPS appended after .jpeg. So, they sent me "logo.jpg.eps."

Happens to me all the time and it's very frustrating trying to tell the client why it's wrong.

Back in the day, people would send me a logo cut out of the newspaper, as camera ready art.
Same thing, just different names, unfortunately.

"Thanks for sending your logo. I need you to send a hi-res version so I can print it on the piece. 17"x17" @ 300ppi would be ideal, but anything close would be great.

"Can you just get it from our website? It's in the corner of the main page"

I have no use for any of this, but it was fascinating.

$tevie, that was awesome!

I've sent the file three times. Your email server is bouncing the 300mb TIFF saved in a Publisher file. smiley-laughing001

OK, I LOL'ed at that graphic.

yeah, I used to get that all the time when I did layout.

what rg said is also true, I began doing this stuff in high school and we would do layout on a drafting table with various repro'd graphics that hadn't been an original in a looooong time.

Yup, and it would be a small mushy one with instructions to make a 6' banner...and "make it look GOOD because I got a lot more work where that came from"!. Oh joy.

Bitmapped files instead of vector files. 'Hi res' Word files. Ginormous TIFFs as email attachments. All very annoying.

But the guy who's behind I want to kick from one end of the block to the other is The Last Guy.

You know the SOB.

The one who had no trouble at all enlarging that 72 dpi grayscale TIFF into a 12 foot full color banner.

By the end of the day.

For $25.00.

That guy.

I'd like to snap that pointy horn right off his forehead shove it right up his...

$tevie, that was great!

I typically ask for "vector EPS".
- If you ask for EPS, Illustrator... you often get what you describe.
- If ask for vector, you often get the same, or it pasted into Photoshop and converted to a smart object that's "vector".

Ever get sell sheets / look books in an Excel spreadsheet?

How about a drawing ON A NAPKIN that they expect to look polished, with no extra work?
