Electrician Question: Upgraded panel to 200 amp, now need Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter

How was built in the 50's. 2nd story put on in 1985. All done with permits

Opened a permit to have an upgraded 200 amp panel, and had an inspector scheduled to come out tomorrow.

This guy realized he was a day early, but I said, come take a look. He said he wasn't the electrician inspector, but that tomorrow it would be. , but he said that we need a separate Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter for each ……….and I'm trying to remember, what he said, but the printout says BEDROOM area.

But this house was built where they would have a circuit share, they didn't have one bedroom, wired to come straight to the panel. Has anyone else run into this? when upgrading a panel?

I have searched google, and I can see where electricians have been running into big problems with this.

Also these Arc Fault breakers kick off very easily, and that is what the inspector today says.

Wonderful progress.

Codes vary by cities, towns, counties, and states. Arc fault breakers are code for bedrooms these days. For NEW construction. The rules, however, vary to see if you need to upgrade to new breaker box breakers. The rules also vary to see if you need to upgrade house wiring. Most don't make you do that. Some are almost punitive in nature. (Chicago, NYC).

I have AFCI's in my house on the bedrooms (Built in 2002). I've never had a problem with them.

It can also vary with the individual inspector and what kind of day they are having.

3 of my buddies had massive garages built by the same contractor in a 3 year period. Each ended up with the same inspector. The inspector's hot buttons were different every visit, and some were assnine. He didn't say a thing about the panel and wiring in 2 of the garages, and went apeshirt over the third, even though it was the same model panel, same breakers, and wired by the same guy. 2 of the garages used the same blueprints.

Oh, he refused to sign off on the construction on one of them, because it wasn't painted. It was primered T-111 siding. AFAIK, primer is paint. It just didn't match the house. The other 2 were fine with just primered T-111. Same inspector.

All good.

Inspector came out, this one was an electrician, and ever said anything about Arc Breakers. He said you can call SCE in a couple of days, and he will call them to OK it.

He just wants to come back and look at lath, and wiring to make sure it doesn't leak. But electrical is golden

Yes, leaky wiring can be problematic.

Timely... I am having a problem with an AFCI breaker tripping constantly.
Have not been able to nail the problem down.
I had a look tonight-- there are three bedrooms in each apartment, but only one AFCI. The electrician dealt with the code by writing "bedroom" next to the AFCI, "summer room" (I think he meant sun room-- polish guy with little english) next to the other, and "office" next to the third.

he meant summer room
and it had nothing to do with being a ignorant "polish guy"
