Dropbox

I have had a dropbox account for quite some time, but recently I had two people share folders, and boom, my 2 gigs is gone. Is there anything I can do about this other than pay dropbox for more storage? There's stuff these people shared with me that I don't need (but a lot that I do need), so I wonder about that. kj.

You can add a few hundred megs by doing some simple things -- facebook like, tweet, etc

There are also services that will get you more space, google...

Do you want to keep those shared folders ? If not, you can opt out.

Inviting friends and family to use Dropbox gets you more storage too.

I use shared folders in two ways with my family members. Some folders are intended to have permanent content and the files in those folders are small. Other folders are intended for temporary files and we copy the content out and delete from dropbox. So you have to decide if you want that content to always be there or not. If the answer is no then you work out an arrangement to delete the files after x days. If the answer is yes (you want to keep the files in dropbox), then you just plain need more storage which means forking out money. I paid for more storage and I'm very happy.

If you don't need the functionality of having a folder continuously shared, you can simply copy the stuff that you do need out of the folder to another place on your HD, and then leave the folder share.

I've been trying to do the "5 things" to get the extra quarter gig, but I'm one short. It seems like the last one, whichever it will be, has a chance of being annoying. It depends what they have to do to get me the extra gigs, I think. Also there's up to 16gigs available for something, but it looks like it will annoy people too. I have to do drop box because that's what the people who shared folders are using. I don't want it on my phone since I already have google drive, but that might be the only thing. Maybe I can install it, then uninstall it?

I was kind of wondering about all the stuff in the folders that people shared with me that I don't need. If I delete it, it will be gone on their dropbox, right? I wish I could just delete it from mine, and keep the stuff I need. Thanks! kj.

Am I wrong in thinking that if you have a gig of audio files on your google drive, that when you share it with someone they just have access, and can add stuff, without it counting toward their max gigs? And that this is different than dropbox? That makes drive a lot better for me if that's true. kj.

As is mentioned above, If you need the stuff in the shared folder, simply copy it to your hard drive and then inform the other person that they need to delete it now.

Also, it's been awhile but which step is the annoying one? I remember I did them all. Also, I've invited dozens of people. I put it on my phone. I shared my camera with it. All sorts of stuff to get free space. All my 26gb is free space. Dropbox is pretty innocuous IMHO.

I think I paid for 100gb. Price was good and I love the service. I put ALL of my documents onto dropbox so I have access to them from whatever computer or IOS device I am using. I still can't believe Apple gave away this market when they ended idisk.

Ok, that's what I thought. They need that stuff there, and they share it with others who need it there. I just don't need all of it for me.

If you have 26 free gb, I'll figure out how to get more without annoying people.

How did you get all of that space? kj.

Copy.com gives you free 15GB to start, and may still add 5GB more just for signing up. Use my referral and we'll both get an additional 5GB:

[copy.com]

I saw somewhere there was a limit on what I can get for referrals, but if so, I don't know what it is.

I use copy for sharing some files, and for sync'ing my Documents between my two Macs.

Does Dropbox still limit you to 2GB free?

I've got a 50GB Box.com acct that I don't pay a dime for and have been happy with. Not sure how it compares as far as simplicity and or features. Only complaint I have is that it limits the total size of the individual files (I assume to prevent/deter piracy) without a paid acct. I think i started with half that size and jumped through the hoops to get up to 50GB. Pretty easy if I recall.

They can simply remove the stuff or just un-share that folder once you've gotten what you need. Easy peasy.

Mostly invites. I invited everyone I know. Some already had DB some didn't. I always couched it with a "I need to send you something, do you have Dropbox?" type delivery.

That's the beauty. Just create a folder in Dropbox and pick someone to share it with. It can be empty if you want. Al they care about is that you shared it.

That's all helpful. Thanks! I haven't used stuff like this collaboratively, so there's a lot I don't know. I'm getting there though. kj.

Understood, but for those that prefer not to pay for content, the natural assumption may be that they'd also prefer not to pay for storage to house the stolen content.
