Mavs is OK on the C2D MBP, but haven't gotten up the nerve to go to Yos yet, but w/ 4GB RAM, nice to hear that 3GB is gratifying.
I have only been doing email, light net surfing and watching youtube. Nothing heavy. Should I up the RAM to 8 GB?

I would add a SSD everyday of the week and twice on Sunday before adding any ram.
That, too.

If you're not rebooting every day then yes. Even when used for nothing more than email you're gonna find Yosemite slowing down dramatically after a few days without a reboot with that little RAM.

It's *very* easy.
I'm typing on a black 3,1 now.
I think it was a matter of removing the battery, removing four screws, pulling a bracket, pulling the HD, installing the SSD, putting the bracket and screws back, and installing the battery.
It took me 15 min. I could probably do it now in five.

This is the perfect SSD for you rob: [eshop.macsales.com]
And not to throw make you not do it, but RAM was talking about a MACBOOK 3,1, not a MACBOOKPRO 3,1 -- its not quite that easy... but not hard either. Just a lot of screws. Make sure you have the right small phillips.
