Farewell to my dear friend "Gutenberg"
Posted by: $tevie
Date: January 08, 2015 05:03PM
One of my best friends has shuffled off this mortal coil. I am bereft and without words. Jackie and I were friends for decades. I discovered dealchat and kept referring to it when she would have mac problems, and eventually she cut out the middle man and started posting there herself, as Mergenthaler. During one of those last purges as dm began to implode, she was banned but returned as Gutenberg, and Gutenberg she remained up to her last days here at MRF.

I waited for her obituary to run in the SUN because I didn't know where to begin to describe her life. I'm afraid the writer hasn't captured even the half of it, but he hit the main points. Jackie, I will never stop missing you.

Jackie and I used to play Words with Friends quite often, and she was always there to help me when I tried to bake something, since she was an expert baker/cook and I know almost nothing about it.
I will miss her posts here and our off the forum interactions. We have lost another good one.

That is very sad. I always appreciated "Gutenberg"'s posts as they almost always offered some insights into the media that most of us are unaware of. She will be missed.

I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

This is terrible news.

She was in certainly a cherished member of the forum.

We have lost and will lose members to the other side, but it's especially sad when we lose a female member.

My deepest condolences, $tevie, to you and all who knew her personally.

I can't even begin to adequately express…

I just have no words.

Gutie is an all time great of this community. She donated to many of the charitable causes we raised money for. Money for books, hurricane relief, iPad for autistic children are among many projects she donated to. She even bought chocolates for a fundraiser my son's underfunded school had. Her intelligence, humor, and kindness help this forum, this community be a special place for me on the Internet.

She also championed causes in her community, revitalized a library, and gave soul to that neighborhood.

She is a giant among us.

Stevie thanks so much for sharing that obituary and I'm very sorry for the loss of Jackie, who has left us much too young.

It's wonderful to read about the flesh and blood people who to many of us only appear as a few lines of black and white text. You can pick up glimpses of heart, intellect, and humour that way, but of course that doesn't tell the whole story of who a person really is. To read that today was a gift. Thank you. We'll miss you gutenberg, rest in peace.

Thanks for posting, $tevie. Gutie and I were friends off the forum and on Facebook but to my dismay, we never met "IRL". The lovely things others have written about her make this news more difficult to absorb. I so wish I would have had a chance to watch a game and enjoy a cocktail with her- I can only imagine the fun.

My deepest condolences to Jackie's friends and family. May her memory be a blessing.

very sad. she will be missed. I was looking at some old files last night and saw Steve Jobs commencement speech at Stanford in 2005:

Quote
Steve Jobs
No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Wow... How sad. I always liked reading her posts, she could get quite spirited at times. I was wondering why we hadn't seen any Gutenberg postings in a while. I always figured that with a screen name of Gutenberg, she was involved with print media in some fashion.
