Google Earth crashing on startup
Posted by: Pam
Date: February 04, 2015 01:30PM
I rarely use this app but needed it today. All it will do is crash on startup. Since Google Earth Pro is free, I downloaded and tried it with the same result. I don't have any saved places and deleted the one preference I could find.

This is on a 2012 mbp, 10.10.2

Is there an uninstall option? Restart? Different user account?

Check the console log and see what's got its biscuit in a crumble?

This is what the error report shows:

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000000000

I trashed google earth and reinstalled, downloaded and installed google earth pro, restarted, checked Library for plug-ins...

Default alternate user account is Safari only.

Try the Safari 'only' account. Google Earth should be in the Applications folder.

Run DiskWarrior.

Safari only account means no access to anything else. No desktop, no finder, no dock...

I see. Then create a new user account.

I ran across this just last week and this is what fixed it for me...

Go to Library>Internet Plug-Ins

Delete the files with fbplugin in the name (i.e. fbplugin_1_0_1.plugin, etc.)

Launch Google Earth

Two wrongs don't make a right, but, three rights make a left.

I have filevault enabled. My disk would have to go through the decrypt process to give an alternate account access to apps.

This is odd.

It might not be your user library but the system library.

Yeah, but so far none of the suggested fixes have involved the system library.

Mine did.

The internet plugins are in the users Library. Not the system Library.

"You should check both the Internet Plug-Ins directory in your home directory (/Users/maximum1/Library/Internet Plug-Ins) and the system-wide plugins folder (/Library/Internet Plug-Ins)."

The culprit was this guy: WebVideoPlugin.plugin in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins. .....
The problem was for all users so I should have thought of the library at root level."

Except there's no /Library/Internet plug-ins in the system-wide folder

Had to unhide my user/Library to find that file. And it was the only plug-in. And the responsible culprit!
