Syncing up a new iPhone questions

I picked up a 64 GB iPhone 4s to replace my long in the tooth 3rd gen iPod Touch.

Is there anything special I need to do, or do I just need to connect it to my iMac and let it rip? I want to sync all apps and music.

I'm running 10.6.8 with iTunes 10.6.3.

The iPhone is running iOS 7.1.2

TIA

Make sure you backup and sync your old one, then "restore" your new one from that backup.

I don't quite understand.

Are you saying that I need to do one final sync with my iPod Touch?

Then what? What does restore from backup mean?

Your music playlist will already be on your computer. The Apps will already be associated with your account. So you dont really need to back it up since you are using it as an iPod.

The backup might not be compatible with the iPhone, never tried it from iPod to iPhone, so I dont know if it will work. Probably will though.

There are two types of restore.
Restore to erase everything. (factory setup type) [support.apple.com]
and
Restore from iCloud or iTunes, to backup from a previous saved backup. [support.apple.com]

I'm actually not just going to be using this as an iPod if it matters.

I activated this phone with TracFone under their BYOP program today.

Nothing much is happening when I hook up my phone to my iMac. The only thing that happened was that iTunes demanded to be updated to version 11.4 which I did. When I hit "sync" in iTunes, it says that it's syncing, but I think that the only thing that's happening is that the phone is syncing to iTunes. None of my music or apps is syncing to my phone.

Okay, maybe I found it. You have to click under other tabs in this silly program to sync things.

We'll see.

How else would iTunes know what you want to have sync'd to your iPhone?

I don't know. It used to be that iTunes would automatically sync everything unless you configured it to do things manually.
