Wife just lost her iPad...anyone know the inner workings of "Lost Mode"

So my wife just flew to LA today for business and either lost her iPad Air or it was stolen somewhere between airport/dinner/hotel. I'm not very clear and can't find good info on exactly how the "Lost Mode" aspect of Find My iPhone/iPad works.

Specifics:
•Ipad Air wifi only (no cellular)
•It is password protected
•Find my iPhone is enabled
•It only had about a 15% charge left
•No particularly sensitive data on it. I recently wiped it due to some charging issues.

I tried to pull it up on Find My iPhone and it was offline. I put it into lost mode and entered a contact phone number as well as a message to be displayed on screen. I also told it to alert me when it was found.

What I'm not clear about is since it is wifi only how will it get this info? Nobody will be able to connect it to an unknown wifi network without the passcode correct? Or will it be able to get this message/phone number whenever it's near any wifi network? Am I missing something...lost mode doesn't seem like it can help in this situation.

You could call Apple Support.

I think I will just put an OUT OF ORDER
sticker on my head and call it a day.

Tough deal.

Good questions. If it can't connect to a network then it cannot be found. Apparently it cannot be wiped without disabling Find My iPhone. Hopefully you have the serial number and can report it to local authorities should someone turn it in.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

It can automatically connect to a non-protected Wi-Fi network. Even if it's asleep.

Have you called the airline? There's a remote chance that, if left on the plane, it could be waiting at Lost & Found.
