Whoa- Apple may *really* be making a car after all!

Okay, kind of last-weeks news, but apparently today the Financial Times gave this rumor another kick by noting recent hires and talking to unnamed folks-in-the-know.

I think FT is a pay site, so here's the nut of it from Reuters:

Quote
Reuters:
Apple Inc is hiring automotive technology and design experts to research at a secret lab outside its Cupertino office, the Financial Times reported on Friday...The background and seniority of the executives suggest that Apple may be trying to build a car, the financial daily said, citing sources.

Well, sources named "anonymous", I guess.

Quote
Reuters again:
The head of Mercedes-Benz's Silicon Valley research and development unit was one of the latest hires to the research team....

"Three months ago I would have said it was CarPlay," FT quoted a person who has worked closely with Apple for many years as saying. "Today I think it's a car," the person said.

(my emphasis). Still a little hard to believe...but if true, holy @#$%&!

I agree with you on both points!
Hard to believe...
But... holy @#$%& indeed!

I do think that that's a market/industry that Apple is unprepared to fight in. But they DO have the cash to do it if they choose to.

Agreed. But I think there's some precident from Tesla in that they're just about the only new carmaker to find critical success for the car AND success with a "non-traditional" (i.e. no dealerships) sales model. And by that you'd think it would require a carmaker with decades of experience to do either, but obviously not.

Or probably, BECAUSE they haven't been in the game for decades they could do it. And by they I mean Elon Music, Mr. SpaceX ... but Apple lost their visionary to the cancer thief.

I can't imagine Apple ever selling cars the traditional way, let alone a traditional car. (But I also have some difficulty believing they really CARE about cars enough to want to make one ...)

Heh! Isn't that a 60's era Hot Wheels car? I think I once had one very similar to this.

It's an amalgam of Bill Mitchell's personal XP-700 (a '58 Corvette custom) and I think, a dune buggy with "Jetson's" dome. Love the Jony Ive greasemonkey!

deckeda, I was thinking more like this:

The pic you posted is similar, and IMO, WAAAAY COOL! I would love to own it!

The filler nozzle will be square and a standard round gas filler won't fit in it.

There is no way it will run on gas. This will be like a Tesla.

With the advent of computerization, alternate fuel technologies, and diver less automobiles, this may very well be a time for companies not associated with the auto industry to enter it.

What makes GM, Ford, or Toyota so special in a car market that is undergoing a radical reinvention of itself? Sure, they built cars with internal combustion engines and mechanical linkages - but cars in the near future may not have any of that.

Companies like Tesla and Apple can evolve rapidly simply because they are not wed to past design and technology. This could be an area for reinvention - Recall that in 1914 there were 4,600 carriage makes in the United States, by 1925 only 150 remained.

Just because the big name automakers exist today doesn't mean they will in a decade or two.

Tires will be non-replaceable
They won't have a Parts Department
If it stops working they'll say that it's because you got it wet.
When you bring it in for warranty service, they'll just swap it with a refurb.

And, honoring Jobs wishes ... there will be no place to mount a license plate.

Heh! Isn't that a 60's era Hot Wheels car?

That was one of the choices in the JoT panel.

IF the FT article is correct about who's been hired away from where, it would be hard not to believe that Apple is doing something pretty big in the auto industry/.

It's not like they've even entered a market they've never been in before.

But I still think they'd need a lot more auto-based talent than we've heard about. IF any of them turn out to be suspension experts, then I'm a believer. Know what areas these new hires work in might shed more light.

IF it really is going to be a car, it won't be a secret for much longer.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Apple may be working on a car-related project, but a complete, marketable vehicle is quite a reach (the clown car from Google doesn't qualify).

They've also hired a lot of medical device experts in recent years, and used their expertise to integrate those functions into their core products, not develop and market such devices themselves.

The research labs the automakers have set up in Silicon Valley (BMW, V-AG, M-B, Ford, GM, etc. all have them) are focused on electronics and new technology, not engineering vehicle platforms. That kind of work is still done in the midwest and the Fatherland.

To do theirs, Tesla established an engineering center in MI (before closing it), but a lot of their hires in Palo Alto are still former industry workers.

Go back to bed and wait for some real news.

(Herr Piech would not be pleased that MRF censors the name of his empire).

It'll be the slimmest and lightest car available, and will have no unsightly doors.

In honor of all the recent Mac's, you'll only be able to charge it by crawling under the car to plug it in.

Maybe they can get GM to release the designs of the Corvair Monza GT to them...I still think that it is a cool looking car.

Well, now the WSJ say Apple may attempt a Get Shorty.

The plot thickens.

Maybe Rob Enederle finally got something right.
